ho valve springs
Sunday, July 16, 2006 11:48 AM
iam porting my 2.4l ld9 head and want some stiffer valve springs. i have heard of ppl using ho valve springs so are they really stiffer? or should i just get some from manipart.
and also what do you think about the car customs 1mm over sized valves? or would i be fine with stock ? or should i get the car customs stock sized valves?
iam building my engine with 11.1: compression pistons
and eagle rods so is it really worth it to get over sized valves on a high compression engine
If i went with the ho springs would i need new retainers ?

Thanks
paul

If you are going to port your head, you might as well over-size the valves to support the extra flow. Karo is the man you want to go through too so goo choice there.

I'm unsure about the valve springs, but you know you could leave your bottom end stock and swap an entire 086 H/O head onto your block.. which will give you the higher flow, larger valves, larger cams, bigger hydraulic lifters, higher spring tension and the ability to use the H/O intake and exhaust manifolds which (arguably) flow better.

I do believe that the valves stems in the 2.3 and 2.4 are the same diameter, so should you be able to swap the 2.3 springs (would have to be the same inside diameter and height) without getting new keepers, retainers, spring seats or guides Replace your seals anyway if the head is off. You may want to look a little further into this though before you tear it apart. Don't go off of just what I say.

The 2.3 valves are thicker then the 2.4......

2.4 = 6mm stem

2.3 = 7mm stem

you can use 2.3 valve springs, you just need the 2.3 retainers and 2.4 keepers. I have the setup currently on my built LD9, and its seen 9k rpms (accidentally) and 7k rpms daily...... w/o any problems.

2.3L’s 84-pound valve springs (closed pressure)
2.4L's 60-pound valve springs (closed pressure)

I'm using the SS 1mm oversize valves, from Karo... the shop that did my valve job was able to seat them using the stock (re-ground) valve seats... same guides. I got new valve seals, but re-used the same springs, locks, retainers, intake rotators....

iam guess gm would have them but wont they charge up the a#% for them so if anyone could tell me where to get some 2.3l ho valve retainers that would be great

also i got my ho valves springs to day and there alot thicker but they are a lil shorter is that going to become a problem on the valves sealing ??????

Thanks
Paul

I'm sure if you get a knowlegable person at a parts store they can look up a Melling part number for you, i'm 1000% sure melling will make a stock replacement spring for the H.O.
