Engine advise
Wednesday, July 05, 2006 10:01 PM
Ok i am considering rebuilding a 2.4 i have in the shed for my 01 z24. I want to do the H.O. cams with hp tuners and better pistons and rods. Would i be better off with an 086 head with the 8.5-1 pistons and an H.O. exhaust manifold or a 2.4 head with 10-1 pistons and a header. Either way the head will be ported and polished and im using the HO intake manifold and throttle body. Also what compression ratio would i have with the 086 head and that setup 10.5-1? What octane gas would i need with that, 89?

Any help is appreciated

i have heard ho cams are far to aggressive for are cars and will see no power gain with them but as far as the rest iam also rebuilding with high compression piston and 11.1: compression and .020 over with a ported and polished head and stiffer valve springs and the rest i already have and with 11.1: you going to have to run at least 91

They are agressive but can be use.

A stock 086 head flow more than a ported 2.4 head.

Thanks for the info but what compression ratio would that give me with the 086 head and the 2.4 8.5-1 pistons?

With a .020 over piston and a 12.4CC DISH, you'll get 9.95:1 with the 086 head

remember you have a cam positioning sensor so you must use you cam housings. hotrod.com has a huge write up on the ho motor and how to do what you want. in my 95 cav i just put in the whole 92gtz motor it is working fine so far but my 95 has no cam sensor good luck on you build

Thanks again for the info. I think that i am going to use the hp tuners to turn off my cam sensor and just let it run in batch mode. I hear that it idles a little rougher but thats ok. Does running it that way have a big impact on mileage? Not that that is a huge concerne but I am curious.
