Started to rebuild my engine over the last week and thought I would share some of the pics of the build.
Here is how I got the block back from the machine shop. It was washed, honed, line honed, new cam bearings pressed in, and ARP main studs installed.
Stock rods and pistons with ARP rod bolts for the rods.
New piston rings and new bearings throughout.
New ZZPerformance XP Cam shaft
Rollmaster Adjustable timing set
Crank shaft and main caps installed after plastigauging all main bearings. If you look close at the side of the block you will notice that the 3800 uses a 4 bolt main setup. Two from the top and one from each side.
Installing pistons and rods and plasigauging all rod bearings along the way.
Balance shaft installed
For some reason I forgot to get a pic of the cam to balance shaft sprockets or of the cam install itself. Sorry guys but here is a pic with the timing set on. There is a gear driven off the cam (behind the cam gear that drives the balance shaft.
Lifters
Front cover installed with new oil pump and water pump gasket installed.
New front main seal
Oil filter to block housing installed
Crank sensor sheild
Idler Pulley installed
Crank pulley installed
And how it sits right now at the shop.
That is as far as the build can go for now. I am still waiting on some new ARP head studs, 105lbs valve springs, valve retainers, valve locks and valve seals. That stuff should be here sometime this coming week. Once that stuff gets here I will continue with the build and post up the progress pics. I'm hoping to have the car on the road again within the next few weeks.
For now I am going to clean the block up a bit, a new coat of black paint and she will look like new.

Raven that is looking awesome. Get that engine rebuilt and back in a car so you can put a video up NOW!
ThrasherCharged.com
Check out those guys, they make an intercooler, header(although not for J's) , etc for the 3800. They may be helpfull in getting the most out of that glorious engine.

I think the best looking part is that crank shaft?

Thrasher does make some good parts for the 3800 (I have their nitrous plate) but they are expensive. Nothing against Thrasher but I like to deal with ZZPerformance as they have done far more testing on the 3800 than anyone else. I already run an Intense intercooler on it now and SLP headers are just around the corner.

I think so too, what a pain in the ass to find a good crank. Thanks again Isaak for shipping me down a good crank to use.
P.S. Your mounts are looking good.

Hey raven, im working very slowly on a 3800 rebuild, well before trying to get it in the 'fire. Oh crap, forgot the damn site, i gotta go find it, but there is a company that makes lighened stock size pullies and a crank scraper for the 3800 s/c. Ill be back when i find the link.
BTW James, engine is looking good, that will be my project next year, but for me it will be a "build-up" compared to your re-build
Can`t wait until I receive the mounts, you and Brad will get pics of it in the car, no worries.
im excited to see what your gonna run with some more boost. im smelling mid 12's easily.
looks good so far
pacesetter has 1 3/4" tube headers coming for the gtp's , should be ready in a couple weeks
BOOSTED wrote:im excited to see what your gonna run with some more boost. im smelling mid 12's easily.
I'm excited too
I'm going to stick with a 3.0" pulley for the first 1000kms or so. Since I have the PT and the ability to tune the PCM I want to make sure my fuel is dialed in first and then up the boost. Hopeing to be able to run a 2.6" pulley with no KR daily by the end of the summer (aprox 350whp).
Just waiting on new springs, retainers, locks, seals and head studs to come in. Going to check the mail in a bit, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Once I get everything here I will put the rest of the engine together and post up the pics. I'm going out of town this weekend so I'll probably starting putting the car back together next week and hope to have it back on the road by next weekend.

Always good to see more companies making parts, I'll have to take a look. Right now the plan is to go with a set of extreme TOG headers (1 3/4" Primaries).

you know that tog is outta business ? so they might be hard to get
also with the 2.6 pulley , you should be deep in the 11's with traction
my friends gtp sedan has ran 12.1's with a 2.6 and he is still trying to get the tune right

I haven't heard that they went out of business, thats too bad. From what ZZP has told me they still have quite a few in inventory plus they are always coming up for sale on clubgp too. Thats one of the things I like about this engine, used performance parts are very easy to come by cheap.
I was looking at a set of TOG extreme's today for $500us.

ive havent dealt with zzp yet , but ill be modding the gtp my g/f has
there always seams to be a set of headers for sale on clubgp , as well as other good parts
tog went out just after they started doing the 2.0 s/c headers , im not sure what happened , but i know 1 of the cali guys used to work there , i kinda figured it was better left not asked on what happened
but alot of people seam to like there headers for the 3800

I've been dealing with them for a little over a year now and have always gotten very good service. If you have a question they are quick to get back to you and they ship their product asap.
Too bad about TOG from what I have read and been told by a few who have them they are one of the best headers out there for the 3800. I'll have to get a set asap before they are all gone. You will love to mod your g/f's, they are so accepting of new mods.

yeah , we dyno'd with the group on a dyno day , and it made 195whp and when i removed the filter and lifted the hose and lid for the air box so that it got some what cooler air , it made a 206 to 208 whp
it was in the low 90's when it was dyno'd
im still considering getting rid of 2 of the 3 cavs ive got and getting a gtp , they are so nice for daily driving , and the boost gauge hardly shows any boost and it still moves very easy
ill post a picture when the pacesetters are done
Any thoughts on some roller rockers? I knew a kid with a GTP, and after he installed the roller rockers, it was a whole new car in the top end.
Not sure if that is possible with the cam you put in, but...just a thought^^^^^
Fst Cavy wrote:Not sure if that is possible with the cam you put in, but...just a thought^^^^^
Really it came down to deciding between 1.9:1 rockers or the XP cam (can't do both due to clearence on stock heads). Since the XP cam makes more power than the rockers I went with the cam. I can also upgrade the rockers in the future (probably 1.7:1) when I redo the heads to gain even more lift.

When I'm just driving around the city under "normal" driving conditions lol I never see more that 10 inch pounds of vaccum on the gauge, it doesn't come close to boosting.

you can still use roller rockers , just have to use some that are close to the same ratio as the stock rockers
cam is the best way to go , if you have the motor out
rockers are easier when the motor is in the car
i wish my cav never got below 10 inches , lol
Parts! Parts! Parts! lol
Just picked up the mail and look what the nice postman brought me.
I'll be finnishing the engine build tonight after the shop closes. I'll post up some pics later on tonight when I get it done. Only another week or so to go and I will be back on the road.
