muffler to custom catback -- tone question!!!
Saturday, June 24, 2006 4:11 PM
ok i have a ractive muffler that does not sound ricey at all. its a very deep tone and i like it but its a little too amplified.

im getting a custom 2 1/4" catback bent soon and i was wondering if i used my same muffler...would it be the same sound? what would a resonator do for the tone of the exhaust?

HELP PLEASE.

I would suggest picking up an 18" perforated-core resonator to eliminate any buzziness or raspiness due to increasing the pipe diameter. It really won't affect the sound level though.

i used a 20", and its just slightly louder than stock.

i want to be ALOT louder than stock though.

stock has no noise and a muffler is too loud but i like how deep it is.

but what you guys are saying is that the shorter the resonator...the louder the exhaust will be?

and will it be raspier with a shorter resonator???

The longer the resonator, the quieter/mellower
The shorter the resonator, the louder/raspier
But any resonator will help... I needed one after I got my header and aftermarket Cat put on. It helped a ton!

It all really depends. Try it without a resonator and see what you think. I'm using an HKS muffler from a Silvia exhaust that I fitted to my 2 1/4" and it's pretty loud when I'm on the throttle but at cruise it's not too bad. I had a friend drive my car and I followed him in my other car and for what it is I can't complain. I'd like to have a resonator though. It gets raspy at high RPM and if I shift above 4K it "farts" really loud and it's a bit annoying, especially the 1-2 shift.

Is everything in the exhaust stock except for the muffler? If it is, then don't forget that the sound you are now hearing that you think is too loud is currently being affected by the stock resonator. Just something to consider when you install a cat-back/resonator.

when you guys say "rapsy" do you mean the like popping noise a car makes with just a muffler?

also would reusing the stock resonator and a bigger piping make it keep the same otne but a little quieter?

I'm not using the stock exhaust. My catalytic has been reduced to no more than a test pipe and the entire cat-back is custom bent 2 1/4". Right now there's no resonator. By raspy I mean when I get on it the exhaust sounds like a million angry hornets coming to take my soul and when I shift at high RPMs there's a loud high pitched buzzing that I really can't describe. Remember when we were kids and we used to take two pieces of paper, hold them tight and blow through them like a kazoo? It kind of souinds liek that. At idle and cruise it's fine. The idle tone is nice and deep, the cruise tone is a bit louder but still deep, no raspiness. As far as the buzzing I've been told it might be the exhaust rattling but I've checked and rechecked and there's no sign of the pipe or muffler hitting anything.
