Umm...2.0L Supercharged Ecotec
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 12:26 PM
Hello JBO,

Here is situation. I have a 2200 engine in my 02 cavalier. Also the 4t40e tranny. The motor and tranny is pushing almost 102,000 miles. I havent had any problems with them yet but I'm planning to swap the engine between now and next year. I have the part number for the 2.0L supercharged ECO but I dont know if getting that engine is the smartest thing to do. I want a supercahrged engine and preferably a 5 speed manual transmission. I dont know how difficult it will be to swap to an ECO but I want something a little faster and more powerful. Could anyone give me some advice on this? What would be the smartest and most cost efficient thing to do to get a new supercharged engine and a good tranny??? PLEASE HELP!!!

best swap is to get a 2.2 eco and its matching trans (auto easiest swap)

then get the gm eco s/c kit

I'd go with the 2.2L Eco swap and then turbo or supercharge it. I'm sure you wont need much persudaing after hearing the same answer 3 times. lol.

ive heard that in order to put in a 2.0L supercharged ecotec, you have to use that tranny as well... to do this i believe you would need to tube the front end to fit the whole setup and you need to completely swap out all of the electronics(pcm, ecu, all of it) because they have a different setup that is needed to run the engine properly... but hell if youve got the money to basically stuff a cobalt into a cavalier body, then more power to ya!... i dont think anyones done the swap yet, which may be why everyone is suggesting to do the 2.2 eco swap with any combination of mods(sc/turbo)... because its the least challenging, and closest thing youll get (physically and money wise as well) to the cobalt's engine.

please by all means correct me if im wrong, but this is what i had last heard... maybe someone with greater experience in this matter could help out and correct or even support what i said.

the 2.0 has a cam sensor , is drive by wire , has individual coils

that is off the top of my head

also the 2.0 trans is to big to fit in the j's with out alot of modifying

Doesn't the crate engine come with the electronics?

get the upper mount brace bracket thing from a 2.2 eco (look at the 2.0 and 2.2 upper mount-mount youll see what i mean)
get a oil pan from the 2.2 eco
use all belt driven accessories from the 2.0
use a 2.2 eco J-Body auto trans
use the 2.2 pcm and wiring and get it hooked up
get a 2+ bar map
iat sensor form a 2.2
use HPT to get it running well

whats the issue here? its been done before.. bellhousing is the same as any eco. keep it auto if you want right away, then swap that later. not a hard swap for a 00+

no electronics with the crate motor

hp tuners does not support the eco reflash for the s/c

buying a crate motor and all the needed 2.2 eco parts , are gonna cost more than using the 2.2 and getting the eco s/c kit , and the money left over will be enough to make the 2.2 stronger , but are not needed

plus try and find a auto flywheel for the 2.0 , it has 8 bolts , and the 2.2 is 6

Thanks for everyones input. I'm still kinda lost though. I want to save money. So...Is doing the 2.2 Eco swap more cost efficient because there is less modifying? Is the auto tranny going to work good with the turbo or SC?
What all would I need to swap to a 2.2 auto eco from a 2200? Also this.... Someone told me that I could just put a turbo on the 2200 motor I already have if a wanted just a LITTLE more horsepower. Does anyone think thats a good idea if you have 100,000+ miles on your cav??? AAHHHH!!! I want to scream right now cause I want is a turbocharged of supercharged eco so bad. Help me guys.

also, with the 2.0 i dont know if there is a way to open up the blocked off port for the power steering or how hard it would be to either make the egr work on a cav or block that off. it would be hard to use the electric power steering becuase there is a steering wheel sensor that goes with it. I will go outside and look at the cobolt later today and see what else looks different from the cav.

yes, the 2.2 will be MUCH MUCH more cost efficient.
the 2.0 eco will require frame modification, which can get very very pricey, and the entire ecu/pcm/ any other electronics out of the car it came from....
go with the 2.2 ecotec, then supercharge it... you can get more hp outta that engine with a supercharger than the cobalt does stock(if you kinda know what your doing)

Just turbo your 2200. That's the cheapest route.
