Clutch slave cylinder leak: problem or oppurtunity
Sunday, May 14, 2006 5:27 PM
Hi everybody,

to start off, all this is in refenence to my 97 2.2 sunfire.
last year i discovered that my clutch fluid level kept falling and i was losing pressure in my pedal. i took it to my mechanic and he told me that it was the slave cylinder that was leaking. the problem is that it is located INSIDE and not easily accessible. i think... so i was told that in order to fix the problem the transmission has to come off to get to the slave and that it is gonna be $$$$. I keeep a bottle of clutch fluid in my trunk and i have to fill up the resivoir every 2-3 days. not fun!!!

so i have opted to fix the problem rather than screw around filling it up every couple of days. which brings me to the entire point of this post.

If the transmission has to be removed to fix this, then why not replace the old clutch at the same time. im wondering what would be best for my car. nothing extreme but enought to handle approx 180 to 200 hp, ( i hope to acheive these numbers with nitrous and maybe a turbo but that wouldnt be in the direct future, im a college student, i could either have my tuition or a turbo... its a tough call) im guessing with that kind of horse power there would be around 230-250 torque. (please dont laugh or criticize me for these guesses i dont really have a clue but hey thats why its a guess.

i have seen these 2 clutches http://www.gravanatuning.com/applications/1997_Pontiac_Sunfire_Coupe_2.2.aspx/2/542/_Clutches_Flywheels_SPEC_Stage_1_Clutch_Kit_Street_Friendly_Performance_

and this one

i dont really know what is a good company to go with but im thinking if im gonna replace the clutch im only gonna do it once so i might as well go with the stage 2, because i plan to have around 230-250 torque. what do you think??

also while the tranny is out i could replace the upper and lower engine mounts with these pieces

here are transmission mounts too

are these upgrades worth it? money and improvements?

one last question and im done.

lets talk headers for a second, what (if any) are the differences between a 4-1 and a 4-2-1 header? and what is a good one to buy?

http://www.gravanatuning.com/applications/1997_Pontiac_Sunfire_Coupe_2.2.aspx/2/213/_Headers_Pacesetter_Black_4_into_1_Header

are any of these what i would be looking for??
i already have a cat back with a magna flow muffler and there is a very honda-esq buzz when i get on the throttle hard and when i take my foot off the throttle the buzz happens. will a new header fix this irritating noise??

thanks for all your help and for taking the time to read this post.

I would say go with the spec stage 2 and pressure plate get the mounts and get a lightend flywheel i have a fidanza in my z24.
As for you exhaust i would say get the header anyway but a resonator is going to fix that sound.
You need at least a 12" resonator

A lot of people on the org have the spec clutches and like em. Generally speaking a 4-1 header is better for high end horsepower and a 4-2-1 header is good for midrange.

^^^ not always true

the pacesetter header is a long tube , and has the benifit of the better mid range of the 4-2-1 , plug better high end

4-2-1 headers work in a narrow rpm range

get the stage 2
