Finding out what went wrong. The last time I had to rebuild the engine we only had 4 days to get it done so we could leave for the Ontario bash. That means out of the car, tore down, sent out to the machine shop, put back together and reinstalled into the car. Needless to say it was a rush job to the max.
When Steve and I tore it down tonight we found all kinds of stupid things that explain the loss of 19whp after the last rebuild. We found a few leaks in both dome gaskets, the front main seal was leaking and I spun the #1 rod bearing. It looks like my oil pressure dropped due to a loss of oil in the system and starved the #1 bearing. The leak in the dome gaskets got two cyclinders pretty carboned up. Lesson learned....take your time when rebuilding an engine.
This time out it's not going to be like that. The engine will be completely torn down and sent in to the machine shop for a complete run down. The rod, main and head bolts are being replaced with ARP studs, Clevite bearings all around, a new adjustable timing set and new gaskets and seals through out. While the engine is apart I'm going to do some port work to the manifolds, the lower intake manifold, the inlet of the supercharger and maybe some work on the heads. I'll post up more pics as the build goes but it is going to take a few weeks. I'm not rushing anything this time so that I'm not doing this all over again next year.
Here are some pics...

good luck with the rebuild
atleast now you will have time to make it look good
does suck to have to do the job twice , cause it was rushed the first time

Yeah I am going to paint the engine bay and repaint the engine too. It does suck that I have to rebuild it again but you learn from your mistakes and I guess the practice is good.

saw a stock gtp dyno today with close to 210 whp , and my 2.4 s/c only got 186whp
although the air filter came out for that run , the other runs were in the mid to high 190 range
hahahaha raven's conning me into a 3800 s/c swap in the first gen.... and he isn't even trying lol....

Thats bad bro, you got any more updated pics or movies? I watch those 3 you got from a while back all the time. Your car rocks the block man!
man that s/c is HUGE, nice car man ! good luck with the rebuild...
15.574 @ 89 mph stock without charger. new times with charger coming soon.
The engine sure turns heads when people see it for the first time. I love bringing it to the GM dearlership to get parts.
Scarab: a 3800 in a first gen would be bad ass...always been a fan of the front end of them.
Kyj: No more vids of the car but I will get some new ones this year for sure.
Blown DanteMustDie: Thanks, it's an M90 and it is big and very heavy. Probably close to 40lbs give or take a few.

For sure, I'm going to finnish tearing down the bottom end tomorrow and I'll get some more pics of that. I wish I could take a pic of the frustration I'm going to have getting the main caps off
really not looking forward to that at all. I'll take pics of the entire build up when everything is ready to go back together in a few weeks and then the reinstall into the car. If anyone wants any specific pics taken just let me know and I can get what ever you want.

I got the rest of the bottom end tore down today. Thanks to Brad (Double Z) and Steve (ASMD) for all their help and support. Thanks guys!!!
I ended up spinning the #1 rod bearing and #6 wasen't very far behind. In fact all of the bearings were pretty worn and there was a lot of metal through out.
Worn main bearing
Since I had to get my crank turned last time it would be better to go with a new one this time. It just so happens that there is a NA 3800 at the shop that Brad's (Double Z) going to be using to make frames and mounts so he said I could have the crank out of it.
I am going to start pulling that out tomorrow and get it down to the machine shop.
As for the build it will go like this. The block will be washed and cleaned, not making the same mistake twice. The main bolts will be replaced with ARP studs and then the block will be line honed. The cyclinders are also going to be deglazed. It looks like two rods will have to be replaced and probably the new crank turned depending on it's condidtion. The rod studs are being replaced with ARP rod bolts, new main, rod and cam Clevite 77 bearings installed, and a new adjustable timing set. I was going to have the balance shaft removed and the engine balanced but it is just too much money right now, I still need a new clutch, tires and paint.
Here are some pics I took through out the day...
If you look close you will notice that the 3800 uses a 4 bolt main system.

I'm surprised you show up to our meets after half of the things you say on here.
id bore it larger , and balance it
but money are time i understand
nice motor pics

I would love to bore it and remove the balance shaft and balance it and L32 rods, and forged pistons, and cam. ok have to stop now getting depressed.
Just don't have the time or money for it this year.
I do want to get a short block in the future and start building that on the side but for right now I need something that is going to hold my current setup without any problems.

James, if you need spare parts, let me know
@!#$!!!
everytime i see that car, it makes me want to go searching for a 3800 s/c engine and swap it in!
now heres a question
does the 4t65 (auto) bolt right into the cav? or does custom tranny mounts need to be made?

You would need custom mounts.

While you have the 'charger out, send that old girl out and get it worked the @!#$ out of!! Also, pour some N2O to that thing!!!
I wonder.....can you bore and stroke it out to a 4.3 ? Just a thought as I'm not a V-6 guy so I have no clue if it could be done or not.
Good luck with the re-build.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
I am not sure about 4.3 but there is currently a ZZP stroker kit that takes the engine from 3.8L to 4.05L. $1400 later...
Thats a beautyful engine. I'm considering the SC thats on that engine for my LN2 with a custom intake, or doing a SC V6.
Is it a hard rebuild to do?
Isaak wrote:I am not sure about 4.3 but there is currently a ZZP stroker kit that takes the engine from 3.8L to 4.05L. $1400 later...
yeah, and gives you 10-10.5:1 compression.... not a great idea with a heat-gun like an eaton blower bolted to your intake manifold. The 3800 is already pretty sensitive to knock at its stock compression. The stroker kit was meant for all motor setups only, its even advertised that way on ZZP's site.
3800 isn't big enough? lol.... Thats what the blower, or a turbo kit is for... The 3800 can already spool a T04B like its a K03 anyway... not like anyones going to understand that analogy, but the 3800 will get a totally flat powerband with a turbo big enough that an eco couldn't even spool it til 5500. The stock block can handle upwards of 400 hp from what I've read, so in all seriousness, it can put down more power than a J-body could legitimately use, and probably more than most of our trannies can hold anyway.
