currently im running a ractive muffler only on my 05 cavalier and ive noticed a definite loss in gas mileage.....would i be better off just buying a full catback? would there be an increase in gas mileage or decrease? sorry guys im new and i know nothing.
the muffler should help your gas mileage, but not really noticibly. It's possible your driving s hurting your mileage. Do you rev it up to hear it? The cat-back would help mileage, I noticed a small difference.

The muffler shouldnt have any effect on your mileage, your driving style after you got it would most likely be the effect. If you completely upgrade your entire exhaust you may see a slight increase in mileage, not too substantial though. Just keep the lead foot to a minimum.
I've been measuring my mileage religiously for about a year now. Ever since I put the blower on.
I just put an exhaust on a couple weeks ago so in another couple months, I should be able to answer this question definitively.
When I installed the header and full 2 1/2 inch exhaust and intake on my car my mileage went up, WAAAY up ! I'm getting in the 40mpg range from my 5spd ECO cavi and still running in the 14's ! How can you beat that ?

i have a bunch of mods. I don't have boost. I have nearly all bolt ons and my gas mileage sucks big time. I get 17-19mpg city and 26-28mpg highway. I am just getting so ticked and this gas mileage i am getting

That doesn't sound all that bad. My average since last May is 23.7 mpg and for the most part, I'm pretty casual when driving.
If you think you're going to hit the EPA numbers from your window sticker then you're out in La-La Land. Nobody does.
The EPA stickers are nonsense numbers these days. But they are useful for comparing one car to another in general terms.
When driving around the city I get 23 to 25 usually. That's a good mix of city and short highway.
When driving long distance freeway I usually get around 30 to 32, going 75-80mph.
When tooling around the country side I get 36 to 39 (haven't broke 40 yet), doing 50 to 60 with few stops and very consistant speed. (Michigan's west coast is simply beautiful in the summer and fall.)
I do alright in terms of EPA mileage, i get around 22mpg in the city, and when i took a trip last winter, got 30mpg highway. I have a feeling after replacing the air dam in front, and changing the suspension like i did will definitly make a difference. As for the Exhaust, i'll have to get back to you on that one, the shop thats doing my clutch is gonna throw my catback on first, so i can tell if i need a resonator or not.
