has anyone ever blown an eco due to power?
Sunday, March 05, 2006 4:44 AM
Ive been on hear for quite a while and I cant recall one story of any one blowing an eco for strictly power reasons.

I ve heard of the whoops my turbo exploded taking half of the engine with it. but I have yet to see any posts where the block just couldnt take it any more.

I didn't blow up my @!#$... my car took the 100 shot, cams and bolt ons fine... I have pics of a stock eco on 100+ shot form a dirrect port kit.... it went boom real good

he went lean though... it wasnt due to too much power..

You can safely run 1000+ Hp on a properly tuned and modified eco. So for everyone else who killed them either doesnt know how to do that or is just stupid.

Little harsh on the reply there dont you think? ^^^

Nobody's perfect.

And careful with what you say. You're marking yourself.

Just wait till something happens to your car or your motor, people will be all over ya.

Not threatening you just stating facts.

People blow engines, it's a fact of life.

you can get rediculous power out of any engine if "properly tuned and modified" ubt most people see how much powe they can get out of stock engine with maybe some head work

has annyone tested the eco yet?

well GMN tested it... Suncavi has pulled 11.9X 1/4 mile on stock bottom end, Hypsy is consistant 12.8ish, I pulled 13 flat leting off to avoid the limiter, GM did testing and I don't rember the number put all 4 rods went out at the same time in the high 200 hp range...

and finally the pics I promised..... and no I don't knwo whos car or what went wrong, I njust know it was over 100+ shot of nitrous, whoever blew there @!#$ up sent me the pics WAY back in the day, like over a year ago at least.

if u push any engine to far you can blow it.

yu can get crazy power though

John Shepherds 2.0L 1g talon. 55lbs of boost + nitrous makes 1300hp

I'm pretty sure its safe to say those number from GM are BS when there are people on this site making over 300whp with crude tuning.

I'm guessing that a really good tune could make 400bhp on a stock eco.

^^ I agree completely, I was just saying thats what GM rates it to yet plenty of people have been pushing that much if not more without a problem

I actually remember getting the call when it blew.... I was also there when the kit was bought. Im not gonna name names due to it may cause some problems... The reason it blew was due to not enough fuel/too much timing. This also happend the same weekend SNDSGOOD got married. This happend in late 2003.

Yea a 100 shot seems like quite a bit on a stock ecotec unless its tuned right, i'm only running a 50 shot right now and i'm loving it and put down 170 so i hope this will last me lol.

Seems like the problem with that blown engine was the same problem we've seen recently on the car that had hahn's portfueler but STILL ran lean. Apparently, some eco ecus (the ones with no open loop) are capable of RIDICULOUS amounts of adaptation.... where the 2200/2.4 would adapt a max of 20%, some eco ecus appear to be infinitely adaptable... if they can adapt out to 14.7:1 at 100 psi of fuel pressure on 440 cc injectors, at only 6 psi of boost, clearly it can also adapt out the fuel from wet nitrous nozzles as well.

It would appear that the first thing anyone with an 03.5+ eco should do before forced induction of any type (other than the GM charger and the associated reflash) should be to have their ecu reflashed to 2002 specs or swap to a 2002 ecu. This gives you open loop operation to play with, and keeps you from having to do the certain illegal mods to be able to maintain stock engine management and get good a/f ratios (ie: the 3 letter mod that shan't be spoken).

Paco Loco is the only other guy to have blown up an eco that i can remember, but since his was an 04 running only an afpr, fmu, injector setup, i can only assume this was caused by a lean condition as well since everyone else with a boosted 04 has found out very quickly that WOT open loop doesn't exist on their ecu.

the GM numbers were on nitrous if i remember correctly. all 4 rods went at 283 hp (at least that was what the article said...)

after they replaced the rods/pistons is when they decided to go with a turbo setup instead of the nitrous to continue their quest for power if i remember correctly.

Re: has anyone ever blown an eco due to power?

Our rods are the weak link. GM tested the ECO's and the stock powered rods explode when you get around 350 hp. Replace the rods and the next part to go are the pistons somewhere in the 500 hp range. Replae the rods and pistons and your good till the mid 600 hp range. Replace the rods, pistons, and crank and the sky is the limit.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
