Lower engine mount install question

I was checking the install walkthrough on TFM, and noticed that it does not say that they motor needs to be supported at all. Team Forward Motion

When it warms up (it's -40 with the windchill today) I'm going to install my mounts, but I want to make sure I'm not going to be crushed by my motor.

I'm going to use jack stand for the car body, but would a floor jack be fine to support the motor, or should I use another jack stand? Or do I even need to bother with supporting the motor? The walkthrough apears to swap the mount without supporting the motor.

My plan was to use a floorjack with a piece of wood on top to spread the weight along the oil pan. Is this a good idea or not?

Its easier if you support the motor to get the mounts lined up, you don't need to jack on it much, but its easier to use a floor jack so you can raise/lower the engine a bit. The engine won't fall on you, I've done numerous sets of mounts without supporting the motor and not once did it even look like it was going to fall out.

Good thanks. I wasn't too sure. The install looks easy enough, I'm sure I'll be able to tackle it.

Should I use a piece of wood under the oil pan to spread the weight, or does it matter?

for the lower 1 , if your car isnt lowered , take a 15mm and crawl under and just do it

no jack or support are needed , its best to do it on a level surface and out of gear

the upper mount holds the majority of the weight of the engine; therefore, it will only move a little bit (couldn't have been more than a centimeter on mine) when you remove the lower. i suggest having someone with you who can push on the motor from the top or side, however, because the new mount usually wont perfectly line up. You'll see what i mean.

Sounds good. There's snow on the ground, and it's -41 with the wind-chill today, so I won't be tackeling it for alittle while. When it's alittle nicer weather, I'll be climbing under it to try and swap her out.

I am also going to be doing this in the next week or so. I have only invested in the lower mount thus far, because its SO CHEAP, why not? Will the lower mount alone aid in the tq. control? (or does the upper do most of the work)

upper will be the most effective on its own.
