Well im just curious because all cars have a certain year where the speed limiter was changed just curious when that was for gm ?I know the newer gms are suppose to cut out at like 106 mph or something what years are different ? please dont flame me im just curious im not asking how to cut mine or anything lol .
They never changed. 108mph for the J platform. It explain that J-body was not meant to go fast.
The L body don't have a limiter.
I don't think the N body have one either. I know the 2.3 N body don't.

I know my moms old 89 doesn't have one. But it gets a little spooky that fast in a car that has 13 inch wheels and is all stock. I would not recomend it for the faint of heart.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
it started in the late 80's
and i think was used in most all models starting 92 or 93 , certian cars depending on the options didnt
even the V8 f-bodies got it , depending how they were ordered
All j bodies have them, some owners just choose to not have thm.
i have a 95 L body (beretta) it has a speed limiter at 180 km/h.....
the speed limiters on cars are generally set by the type of tires it comes from the factory with.
S and T speed ratings are rated up to 180 and 190 KM/H respectively. now making the cars speed limited to 186 or so KM/H would make alot of sens now wouldnt it.
exceeding the speed of what the tires are rated for can cause them to self destruct, which turns out to not be a pleasent thing to have happen to your tires at 190km/h.
would a thunk it.
Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
my 1990 cavi RS did not have one and i toped out at 125 MPH.
The J-body speed limiter (96+ third gen at least) is 108 MPH or 173 km/h. If your speedometer reads differently, then your speedo is off. (and they're notoriously inaccurate at that speed, so really... who cares..)
Bottom line is... there isn't a single road in North America you can LEGALLY go that speed... so just try not to kill anyone else while you test your limiter, okay?
lenko,
actually i think there is. or something close to it. there are some roads in nebraska or montana or somehting like that that dont even post a speed limit. i remember seeing it on the news a few years back. but they were talkin about changing it to a regulated limit so i doubt by now it's the same.
^^ He's right, Montanna for sure has no speed limits during the day. At night, however, the limit is 80 mph
Some times the best way to get that tailgater off your but is to light a fart.
btw N bodies are limited to 108 as well

You guys are living in the past.... Montana USED to have no speed limit during the day.... it was "Responsible and Prudent".
That's been gone for YEARS! I drove thru there in 2001 and was disappointed to find a real, true, 75MPH speed limit on I-90.
yup,I heard it was becuase the federal government was going to reduce funding to montana unless they enacted a speed limit

the 2.3 L and J body don't have a limiter. none of my 3 2.3 Ecm have a limiter.

Companies don't just determine speed limiters by tires, but also by suspension, brakes, and other various systems of the car. They all have to work together to maintain a safe driving experience. GM decided that the J cannot handle speeds upwards of 108MPH because the car itself cannot handle it, not just the tires.
Any other comments I have have already been posted.
Blown.

prove that GM said that. Im not an advocate of extreme speeds, but id like to see someone prove that GM says the car structurally cant handle those speeds.
Also in michigan when you get into the wilderness backroads, there are alot of roads that dont have speed limits on them.

quoting a service tech from the buick/pontiac/gmc dealer in rochester vermont: if you want a car that'll do more than 108, buy our gto. the sunfire can't handle it.

just because there is no sign saying a speed, doesn't mean there is no speed limit, the state most likely has a law somewhere saying that if a speed isn't posted than there is a preset limit, usually 55 mph
for instance in my hometown, there is only a handful of speed limit signs, but on every road coming into town, theres a sign saying "town speed limit 25, unless otherwise posted"

Yeah the road I live on doesn't ahve a posted limit but when you enter the city limits most if not all the major streets have a notice stating that roads without posted limits are limited to 50km/h.... It's probably the same most other places...
Knowledge about everything and yet an expert of nothing!!
Jack of all trades.
But gee if you had a built Cavalier with better suspension, lowered and 13" disc brakes all around with 18" wheels and z rated tires with 400 whp wouldn't you want to know what your car was capable of?
And what about top speed contest such as the Silver State Classic in Nevada, there you can run your car as fast as you want and it would be nice not to have the stinkin speed limiter.
I have other high hp/tq cars a Monte Carlo SS rear drive with a 850hp procharged intercooled 383 that has no speed limiter, and a twin turbo 73 Camaro ( under construction ). However I'm also a responsible 43 year old MAN who doesn't street race or do "Fast & Furious" stunts but I always like to explore the limits of the cars I build so I'll know what they can & can't do but always on the track.
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
These f'n threads ALWAYS have to degenerate to this topic, don't they?
IF you have enough knowledge and $$$ to build the car up to handle those speeds... and....
IF you're somewhere like a closed track to see what the car can do.... then
SURE... do it.
BUT more often than not, it's lead-footed little turds with no knowledge of how to handle emergency stops from 110+ MPH that kill themselves and others.
(I'm not calling you a lead-footed little turd... just so you ge my point.... MOST people on here exceeding the speed limit are doing it on public roads)
