The raspiness and loudness has more to do with the lack of the catalytic converter rather than your muffler.
Just curious, how come you don't have a catalytic converter?

well, the OEM-style muffler that came off never sounded the least bit raspy and was a great deal quieter than this one, so I'm sure the muffler plays some part in it. The resonator got rid of all the raspiness, and also helped with making it quieter obviously.
As for the cat, when I got the car the cat that was on it was in terrible shape and was doing more harm than good. I'm guessing it was just whatever cat some junkyard happened to have that was thrown on there to pass inspection, since it had '87 Fiero written on it. I didn't have the cash to replace it, so I just had them throw on straight pipe in its place since we don't have mandatory emissions where I live, and just never bothered ever replacing it.
Vancouver Island in BC. I'm guessing the cat that was on it when I got the car was on there to pass AirCare over in Vancouver, but over here on the island we don't have those restrictions. When it came off the car SOOO much stuff fell out of it, couldn't believe how much of a difference it made in how the car ran. That thing was toast.
