exhaust options

I have had my cavalier for about 6 years and I bought a Pacesetter cat-back about 4 years ago. After carrying my Dj equiment around in my car for the last few years I snapped my muffler inlet. So my catback is hanging pretty low. So I just need to replace the muffler. I really hated the pacesetter exhaust I took off the yellow tip a while ago and it looked decent after I put a steel tip on it. I want something fairly clean sounding. Or anything that doesn't sound like bee's in a can. Currently I have a very deep sound at idle but I get some interesting sounds after 100rpm it varies depending on how the air temp is. Anyone got any ideas on like magnaflow, superturbo (Iheard this one on a sunfire dual exhaust), flowmaster, dynomax, w/e. OR anysound clips. I have a 97, 2.2 w, cold air intake. I'm not looking to "go fast" I just wanna sound normal again.

It depends on what you want. Neither I or anyone else can really tell you what will sound best because our opinions will differ. But the popular choice seems to be the Magnaflow and Dynomax o.e. style mufflers with a resonator inline between the cat and the muffler. That will usually do the trick to keep it quiet and they look like stock. The round canister mufflers can be made to sound decent, too. I have just put one on my Cavalier and it doesn't sound all that bad, plus mine has a silencer which really helps.

I've had a Magnaflow muffler on my 2.2 for about a year now and it still sounds great. Its got that deep European sound that you would get from a BMW or Volkswagen. Although I went a little extreme and went with a 3" pipe from the down pipe all the way back so I've got performance with my exhaust too. Good luck on your search.

3"? On a Cavy? And not boosted? That's fricken huge bro. I can't imagine getting gains from going that big. How does it run?

3" non-boosted: you're losing way more power than you think you're gaining. You probably have no back pressure and your engine isn't scavenging as efficiently as it can.

To the author - I've seen how Pacesetter catbacks rotted right off of cars, I'd stay away from them, in my opinion. Many on this site have and like Magnaflow and Borla setups (personally, I like my Magnaflow system). Piecing an exhaust together and having a shop custom bend your pipes would be alot cheaper. Universal Magnaflow mufflers are pretty good, you could pick out a tip, and purchase a resonator to keep volume low while deepening and smoothing out the tone and sound. The larger the resonator, the lower and quieter your exhaust will be. And remember, perforated core resonators are preferred over louvered core resonators because louvered cores often exhibit power loss. Hope this helped.

Blown.
