if anybody can help me! my exhaust is leaving a black residue on my exhaust exit on my bumper. could these be that i am running too rich or could it be that my muffler isn't long enough. my car isn't throwing any CEL codes adn my muffler is as far forward as it can go
It's probably fine, if the tip doesn't clear the bumper it's normal to find some residue, but take a wiff when the car is running. If you smell raw fuel you're probably running rich or the plugs aren't lighting off all the fuel. That may or may not be the case since you're not getting any codes, you might just need a tune up. In my car club we all run DSMs and Galant VR4s, and if you stand behind some of our cars you can smell the raw fuel because of the tune. We intentionally fatten the fuel curve to handle the extra boost at high rpm. For us it's almost normal. For a Cavalier, it's not so normal.

Start it up when it's cold and give it some gas and watch your exhaust. if it spews black smoke you're running rich. Otherwise it's just normal build-up.
Its nothing more than carbon build up, the same stuff that gathers inside of your exhaust pipes. If your muffler exit is underneath the bumper, or further forward than the bumper, then it will still gather on your bumper. If you can, try lowering your muffler and place it so that the exit is several inches behind the bumper. I had the same problem, but I moved the tip back and it stopped. If you can't do that with your current muffler, then either get a new one or carry a bottle of water and a rag in the trunk (Don't laugh, I always have water and towels in my car, in case of bird attacks).
Not dealing with J's...but on my dads Vette, we will start it up and rev it up a bit and black smoke comes out...now this is when it sits (about a week), cause it rarely goes out unless it's nice and never in the winter, it's under cover.
alright awesome guys thanks for the info. really apreciate it. so it's better to move it farther behind the bumper then move it forward so it clears the bumper. i have a ls sport i am thinkin my exhaust was made for a normal LS instead of a sport. cuz i bought the exhaust system off of RK Sport. is there anyway to get rid of the residue off the bumper cuz it's been on 4 awhile?
