2200 revs/rebuild options

I was wondering what could cause the 2200 not to be able to rev to 5600 rpm? It's fine to 3500, makes it reluctantly to 4k and just won't go any farther. I got in touch with a place that installs re-manufactured or used engines, but it's painful to think about the amount of money they want (2300-3400) for a stock engine, besides, I don't even know if it needs it. If it does in fact need a rebuild, what might the average cost of labor be. I'll probably buy my own parts and ask for a mild port & polish as well. Unfortunately, I lack the facilities to do any of the work myself, so I'll have to go to a shop. When I talked to the guy, he said it might be a timing issue, and I do have a strange kind of "chirpy" rattle emanating from the passenger side, just can't tell if it's inside the car or under the hood. I also have a post in my regional forum asking about shops in my area. II'mjust looking for a good option to get what I (might) need with some performance work at the same time. 2300-3400 for a stock used/re-manufactured engine just seems way too expensive to me. Thanks.

BTW: The car currently has 177k miles on it and I just ran a fuel system cleaner which did help, but not much. It is also a 5spd. Just in case anyone needs to know. Thanks again.

why would you lower the redline when others are trying to up it to around 8g

Hmm i think he means his cas is broken and cant rev past there? If thats the case try getting this moved to the maintenece forum, if it is indeed that you want to lower your rev limiter then you can use an MSD DIS II to do it.

Change your plugs and wires first.

Yeah, I think it's broken. I'm trying to figure out what could be wrong. I bought the car brand new and it ran like that right off the dealership's lot. It's always been that way. I have had the plugs/wires changed many times and it does not change. Could there be an issue elswhere in the ignition system? What I fear is that I inadvertently damaged the engine when I first bought it. It was my first 5 speed, and stalled pretty hard a few times, causing the check engine light to come on. Don't know if that could have anything to do with it. Also I've never had anything done with the timing. Is that a possibility? Thanks

Wait,

You bought it Band New and it's ran likek that since day one?
Why did'nt you just take it back at when the car was still new? and make them fix it?

I'I've got a 2200 (so I feel for you) it sounds like the fuel system to me,, check to make sure your FPR is is ok, and have a look at your injectors.. Also if the CEL is on ( or has been ) get it scanned for codes.. that might help..

Other than that..Beats me, That's what you get for not getting the problem fixed at the start.. You could of gotten it fixed for free.
Enjoy your crappy motor.

Dude, Thanks for the advice, but why do I feel like I'm being talked down to here?! Please correct me if I'm wrong or have taken your statements too seriously. The simple fact of the matter is that when I bought this car I knew absolutely nothing about them. Considering the fact that before it, I was driving an '82 Ford Fairmont, the car ran great to me. I just didn't know it was a problem. The CEL never comes on nor had it ever stayed on for any extended length of time, but I'll take your advice on the other stuff. Thanks again for the advice.

Sorry, I just Find it comical that you bought a car with a serious problem and you did nothing, You must have to shift like a mad man all the time..

Also Please Don't spend 2700- 3000 US, on a motor for that thing.. look around there are people buying Ecotec's on her for $450 which is a way better motor..

Trust me, I don't plan on spending $2700-$3000 for it. I don't really have to shift alot. either Also like I said, I didn't know anything about the car when I bought it, I thought it was running normally. This site barely existed when I got the car or maybe I'd have known sooner. I don't have the kind of money or time required for an engine swap. I'd also need a new trans, which I can't afford, and probably wouldn't find another 5 speed anyway. This is also my only car so that kind of downtime is out of the question. I'd ratherr just fix the engine I have and keep it running 'til I can afford a nicer car altogether.

Just my specualtion, but have you ever heard of a rev limiter? The transmission on my friend's Sebring slipped, and when the engine revved too high it cut the throttle. However, if you're driving and this is the case, then you have a serious problem on your hands, which has been assessed by all the preceding posts

Ill post my suggestion here too, just incase you dont look in the maintance forum.

I think its your Fuel pump. I think its your fuel pump because it seems it cant keep up with your need for fuel, Meaning, not enough fuel, you limit your power and RPMs.

177k miles on it and I just ran a fuel system cleaner which did help, but not much

Another reason i think its the pump, you have 177K mikes on it. These pumps dont last for ever. And fuel system cleaner helps lube the pump a bit anyway, which would explain why it helped alittle but not much.

also when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?
