I want to do a head and cam swap on my 97 z24 . I have been looking for the info o n the site but cant find it . Can you lead me in the right direction please.
you're gonna use a 2.3 quad 4 head gasket. you're going to have to alter some coolant passages in the head to line up correctly with the 2.4 block.

and your compression would be insane if you used the LD9 pistons.
I think 11.5:1 compression?
You have to use LD9 pistons due to the difference in bore.

i was also interested in doing this but with a hole bottom end build up also but my question is what piston could i use to bring the compression down?

Is this for a boost setup or all-motor setup? That depends on what you want your compression ratio at. You can always just get a set of 8.5:1 compression LD9 pistons, and then tune for around 10:1 compression plus boost.

I'm in the process of doing this, i already have the 086 head with ss valves and HO cams.
You will need the 2.4 head gasket, not the 2.3!!!! just have to modify the water hole in the head. you will also need the intake manifold and exhaust manifold since the 2.4 ones wont fit. get the exhaust mani from a 90-92 HO engine and whatever year HO intake.
For the piston, i ordered custom wiseco pistons from Karo to get a C/R of 10.5 for a NA set up. it ends up being the 9:1 c/r i think!
I have been looking at this head as well for my boost build. I can get a rebuilt one for around $200 and thought about doing a mild p&p on it. keep my 95 intake cam and running an HO exhaust cam and housing ( I want to keep the stock ecm and ps pump).
I still have to do some figuring on what comp ratio Im going to be going with but for now that can wait.
I have been doing a little searching on the matter but its getting late and I need to go to bed so I can put a fuel pump in my girl friends cavy tomorrow. so can someone point me to maybe a post with some pics of what is needed to be done to the coolant passages?? I just want to be sure I know what Im getting myself into before I go buying a new head. I started to read some of the archive posts but man those are long LOL.

yea but remeber the h.o. cams are a 4.10 lift and will give the motor no valve clearence which means you definitely need to change the pistons no matter what! and like everybody said that head has to be machined to match the coolant flow holes and also you will have to modifie the power steering because the 2.3 had a pully rather the 2.4 notch in the cam ! i would prefer the L.O head and cams but use the secret cams rather the h.o cams[
check my ride out from scratch to present and vote for me !!!

yes the motor is being rebuilt with low compresion pistons. I only wanted to use the HO cam on the exhaust side and run the LO cam on the intake side because of the cam sensor. what is going to be needed to be done to the ps pump for it to work??

me, i,m going with the HO cams and converting to power steering with pulley. I also changed the ecu with th 95 so i can put in the chip to rev higher so i can use full potential of the cams.
as for where to modify the head for water hole, here is a picture i took right after i have done mine. holes circled in red are the one you need to make. Just put a 2.4 head gasket on and match it up with a dremel. here is the pics:
This is with the felpro head gasket ( i got the gasket with the head when i bought it).
I then bought the cometic MLS gasket and notify that the holes are not the same size...
here is a pic:
now i think i should open up these hole on the cometic gasket, but i dunno what to use for doing that! if anyone can help me, that would be nice!!!

either do like me and change to pulley style, or have the intake cam machine to accept the power sterring pump or get the 95 intake cam!
like I said I all ready have the secret cams so yes I have the 95 intake cam. so I will still be using the stock ps pump. thanks alot for the pics that helps out alot. so it after the holes are made it bolts right up right??

yep!
i think you will also need the water outlet from a 2.3 because of the notch on the side of the head.
I need to look into that a little more.
if you have info on that, please post.
do a search and talk to people on Quad4Forums. YOU USE THE 2.3 HEAD GASKET.

you'll def need a water outlet from a pre 95...also i had a machine shop take my LO intake cam and the HO intake cam i had and machine out the female hex and press it into the HO cam....worked for me no prob...of coarse i have a 95 so no cam sensor
Spotabee - sorry but think about it for 1min. Why do you have to MATCH the water holes on the 2.3 head with the 2.4 GASKET. And then you use the 2.3 gasket? kinda stupid don't you think. Most people say to use the 2.3 gasket because they THINK the 2.4 gasket as a ring too small for the 2.3 combustion chamber.
Use the 2.4 gasket since it match the block and match de 2.3 head to the 2.4 gasket.
Just think about it and you'll see that it's stupid to match the water hole on the 2.3 head with the 2.4 gasket when you use the 2.3 gasket.

2.3 Ho
hey Gilles, what about the hole size on my cometic gasket? should i open them up as big as the one on the felpro gasket? How do i do that?
I also read about what gasket to use, some says 2.3, other says 2.4... anyone that has actually done this can tell me which one they use. If not, i think i'm gonna go with the 2.4!
thanx
I would open them up. The 086 is fragile when it comes to heat so better flow means better cooling so better reliability. A "cooler" head will be better. The 2.3 loose alot of power when it gets hot. It likes to run cold.
For the gasket, use the 2.4 gasket.
Gilles
2.3 Ho
allright, i'll try to open them up with a dril or a dremel!! dunno what to use on the dremel tho.
thanx
one more question here...
Why did the cometic gasket and fel pro one has different size hole and location???
Both are for 2.4!!! WHY???
^^good question^^
ok Im just putting it all in my head right now from alot of reading and searching. I want to use the 086 head, valves, and springs with the 95 intake cam and HO exhaust cam and housing, but I am using the stock 2.4 lifters, intake cam carrier, and ps pump. from what I have read in the archives the head will outflow a mild p&p 2.4 head plus I can get a rebuilt 086 for the price of SS valves for a 2.4
in the older post people went back and forth about whether or not the 2.4 cam carriers will fit on the 086 head. so will they fit??
and if I can use the 2.4 intake cam carrier with the 95 LO intake cam on the 086 I can then use the 2.4 ps pump correct??
one more with the 2.3 valves and springs I then need to use the 2.4 lifters??
sorry for all the questions I just need more info

I would use the 2.3 lifter. They are bigger and better.
Gilles
2.3 Ho
well if I get the rebuilt head I'll have to source some lifters but thats not a problem. what about everything else I asked, am I on the right track??

i second that, get some NEW 2.3 lifter. Theres a company on ebay that sells a brand new set of 2.3 lifters...for cheap..
Clevite sells the 2.3 lifters I believe.
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
