alright, i know this is another "what if" performance question, but i would like to hear input from as many people as i can. and yes, i've used the "search" function, and i've been reading a !@#$ load about 2200 upgrades. i have an 2000 auto 01 sunfire w/ only 2 i guess "major" mods (CAI, muffler.) don't want any boost (don't want to throw down too much money) and maybe a nitrous set-up if it was cost-effective. starting to save money to buy:
2.25" exhaust
pacesetter header
hi-flow cat
upper and lower engine mounts
throttle body
intake manifold
port and polish heads
underdrive pulley
yank 2800 stall converter
what kind of 1/4 mile times can i expect? current best time was a 17.6
just want to know if it's worth dumping a lot of money into, otherwise i'll just pay off the loan (shouldn't have bought a 2200 in the 1st place) and then buy a z24 or sunfire gt
thanks, any input would be great

I'd just like to state that you could buy a turbo kit for the price of all that
Then, I can tell you my car ran 17.7 stock, and was in the mid-15s after basic turbo. You won't see those gains NA.
If you're just set against boost, look into a 5-speed swap (or new gears for your auto), this could drop you a full second by itself. Next, scratch the intake manifold and TB from your list, as the cost GREATLY outweighs the gains. Besides, from what I've heard, the RSM 'ported' IM is just the stocker with the lip removed (which you could easily do yourself). And a larger TB is overkill without some MAJOR modifications.

how much was your turbo setup?

$300, but it's not pretty, and it wasn't the right way to go. You can easily piece together a nice 'new' kit for $1000, or buy one for $3000.

wow! really didn't know that you could just piece together a kit for cheaper (i'm a n00b, when it comes to "boost") thanks for input, really turned my head into different direction
would you recommend a certain turbo? or certain pieces i should buy for a turbo set-up?

A factory Mitsubishi turbo from a 4G63 would be a good candidate. A bunch of my friends drive Galant VR4s and they're trying to talk me into using one of their turbos and doing a kit for my car. In theory, it'd be a good idea, the stock turbo - I think it's a 2G or a 4G - is capable of supporting 15psi with no problems. They've all been looking at EVO 16G turbos from a JDM Lancer Evolution so they can go big on the boost, so there's going to be all these turbos laying around. I might try it. It's cheaper than buying a kit. Snag one off a 4G63 or an SR20 (kinda hard to find, tho) or some other factory turbo 4 cylinder, or even get one from somewhere that rebuilds them. A good used turbo can be had for less than $400.

It's FINALLY becoming accepted around here that a 60 trim or Super60 T3 is more than sufficient for a street-drivin J. This is what I would HIGHLY suggest. There are websites that sell rebuilt units in the 300-400 range IIRC, or you can buy brand new for 600-700. If you buy one with an internal wastegate it will make your life much easier (and bring down costs).
There's a seller on ebay that makes turbo manifolds for our engines ($190 shipped) that is well-represented on these forums. I believe
this is him.
If you can weld yourself, you can try making the manifold yourself, as well as any charge and exhaust piping. If not, have a reputable exhaust shop fab them up for you. Charge pipes can also be made from cut-up u-bends and lots of clamps, or radiator hoses
if you want to do it weld-free.
You can purchase an oil line 'kit' online, or use home depot fittings and auto zone hoses to save some $$.
You can use pretty much any BOV you want (from a stock-style Bosch valve, to a 'best bang for the buck' 1st gen DSM unit, to an HKS SSQ depending on finances).
However, the most important part of a turbo setup is the fuel and ignition management, so don't skimp on that.
Any other information you may need is readily availible in the boost forum. gl.

For the super 60, what internal mods are required? I've been thinking nitrous because of cost, but if I can build a turbo setup on my own for cheap, it may be worth it to me. I'm driving a Cavy with an LN2, so it's in the same realm as the 2200.

No internal mods necessary for any turbo. With good tuning the factory 2.2L internals have proven good to 250+bhp. Also, FYOG (for your own good), the 2200 is a LN2. The accepted designations are 2.2L (97-) and 2200 (98+). However, with the older 2.2L you will have problems with the factory injector setup. There are two posts near the top of the boost forum that cover the subject fairly well (
here &
here).
