2.4L vs 3.8L

Ok guys this i sfor all you people with turbo 2.4L or 3.8L swaps.

What is a good turbo setup that will run 12's and be reliable my engine has 120,000 km on it so im not sure if i would need another one or just rebuild this one

vs.

3.8L swap ( I would like a brand new L67 with 5 or 6 speed tranny ) with a turbo kit to replace the supercharger, my goal would be about 400 whp (which is why i would like turbo)

so what you guys think ? ? ?

Whats up people?

If you know what you're doing, you can make a 400 whp car out of each motor under boost, it's all how you "engineer" or setup your vehicle.

There isn't going to be a certain turbo or a certain PSI that will gaurantee you 12s or X amount of horsepower...this is something you have to do on your own and do it play by play. If you buy X turbo and X amount of PSI isn't cutting it, turn it up. I will say you won't reach 400 whp in a 2.4 without doing internal work of course but it is possible just like it is possible with most 4 cylinder motors.

Now, you also have to consider money and time etc etc.

Having a 400 whp street car (especially FWD) is alot to handle. I could understand if you wanted a track car but street is different and especially a daily driver. That amount of power more than likely isn't necessary (but on the other hand what is neccesary and what you want are 2 different things lol). I think you should make a decision by doing some research into people who have done either or and see their outcome but with boost, you can honestly do anything you want...just comes down to how much money you are willing to spend and how hard you work at it.

Also, having that much power requires alot of maintenance...might be more than you're willing to deal with, just something to think about.

^^^^^^ well once i do this the car will not be a drive back and forth to work car but more of a saturday night pull up beside a vette and give him a run car (and hopefully make him say holy !@#$ after blowing by) and possibly some shows (under performance) cause most in the performance are camaros and stangs around here, just want to represent the jbody community

just out of curiosity what are your specs/times njhk and, if you dont mind, approximately how much have you spent up to date?

as for money well i do a lot of work myself and i am willing to spend if it is quality and going to help me attain my goal

right now i lean towards the 3.8 because i think it would help me achieve my goal a lot quicker and easier

Right now I'm still slow lol

The turbo will be installed in a couple more weeks. I'm using a T3/T4 50 Trim Turbo. As far as horsepower/torque, no idea...transmission plays a part of it and also I do have motor work done (upgraded valvetrain) so that's up in the air.

I think you won't need 400 horsepower to beat up mustangs and camaros...you can reach 12s with high 200s...400 is just leaving them in the dust. My personal end goal is 300 whp on a stock tranny (4T40E).

You've set your sights VERY high Javis. Every last one of us here would like to have a 400HP car that will also be reliable enough for daily driving, but look at how much of a hard time most of us have just getting into the 14's without breaking something. Not saying it can't be done, because it certainly can. Just can't half-ass it.

Wereas, the supercharged 3800 Grand Prix's and Monte Carlos are 14-something-second cars right out of the box, to address the original "2.4 vs. 3.8" question. I admire the 3800 motor, and admire even more the guys here who have managed to stuff one in their j-bodies. However, I don't think I'd ever encourage anyone to do the swap. Just seems like trying to do that is the quickest road to failure, expecially considering the time and cost.

It would be great if I could run 12's with my 2.4, but I'm not at all considering the 3800 swap. I'd rather build and turbo the living Hell out of this 2.4. That would certainly do the trick, but at that point you have a car that could fail at any minute it you didn't tune it right. Couple 12-sec J's here, they'll tell you that it wasn't an easy job.

As far as I'm concerned, the 3800 swap would be COOL AS F**K, but if you want a 3800, get a Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy Monte Carlo, or Buick Regal. Until then, turbo that 2.4.

I realize what a pessimistic jerk I sound like, so I apologize for that. But that's just my $0.02.

the 3.8 will be more streetable at 400 hp , then the 2.4 will be

also this needs to be in the boost fourm , not performance for future reference

also the 3.8 at 400 hp will prob be a solid 11 sec motor in our lighter cars , providing traction is there

That kicks a$$. Just the thought of doing a conversion like that creeps me out.
