new high flow cat sounds tinny/raspy?
Monday, January 02, 2006 7:02 AM
alright, so i just got a whole new setup from the engine head all the way back, including a new magnaflow 94035. the car doesn't sound tinny/raspy (when listening from the muffler), but when i stick my head out the driver side door and listen underneath the car, i can hear the cat (and at least the area around it) sounding tinny/raspy when i give it some good throttle. i have a header, high flow cat, long resonator, super turbo muffler. i took it to the exhaust shop thinking i had a leak but they checked everything from the head gasket to the tailpipe and said i have no leak whatsoever. they're a good shop and even covered my tailpipe to force the exhaust out a leak (and make a whistle sound) but still, nothin.

i've only had the cat on for a week, could it be that its just new and needs to break in? or do i have another problem? or is this normal?

thanks your input.....

i have a magnaflow 94035 on mine. when i first installed it, it sounded tinny and made a slight ticking sound. that sound went away after about a month

i've never put one one a 4cy before, only on v8 and the sound improvment was awsome so i was thinking that you might have a leak, but after all you said about checking for one........ just listen to alias. i was just bored and wanted to type something!

Ticking huh? Did you guys with ticking sounds from aftermarket converters weld them in or clamp them in? Clamps are, of course, notorious for not having the best all-around seal in the world. With my last car, the previous owner decided to install a universal converter when the stock one crapped out with no prior experience and without taking the car to a shop for welding. He clamped it in, so it ticked, and I welded it in myself when I bought the car and it never made noise ever again.

it's an exhaust leak.

I have the same problem out of my new mangaflow cat...after it warms up it pretty much goes away....i'm pretty sure its not an exhaust leak because i took mine back to the exhaust shop the guy lifted the car up while running and if you listend you could hear the exhaust gases going through the cat, and when reved it was louder like a raspyness...he checked for leaks there was none to be found...the guy just suggested that it was were the cat was high flow, sounds reasonable to me...

well... we always have to remember that cars sound raspier when they are cold. i have the magnaflow 53005 and for the first few minutes i drive it, it's raspy and nasty sounding in higher RPM's. but once it gets warmed up, not a single bee sound to it.

I did my high flow cat and headers today and i have a raspy/burbling sound too. But as stated above once i drove it long enough to get it warmed up it went away. I was really worried but after reading above i am not anymore. BTW when its warmed up it sounds really good.

viper
you say for cat you got 94035
I was under the impression 94036 was 2.5 and "35" was 2.25
Is this incorrect?

Save a Tranny, Roll-on
15.3@88m.p.h.(I/E)
15.2@94m.p.h.(S/C'd)
15.5@89m.p.h.(Stock GTP)

blwnz24, thats exactly correct. but for personal reasons, i did my full setup in 2.25, rather than the "optimal" 2.5
