2.4 ecotec swap
Sunday, January 01, 2006 2:25 PM
I have a stock 2.4 twin cam and i was wondering what the difference is between that and the new 2.4 ecotec that they threw into the cobalt ss. Has anyone done it yet or inquired about doing it??

No one has done it yet. It would be alot of work (like any other swap) but it's gonna be hard to find a 2.4 motor from a junk yard being that they are only available in 2 model vehicles and it just came out this past year. If you try and buy from a dealer...well...you're gonna spend ALOT of cash.

Well since i am from california (we all know about the notorious emissions control) I am limited to what i can do. I cannot turbo it in any way shape or form. and the GM S/C is for a 5 speed. I got an auto. I have been only able to find one part that is CARB exempt and heard of only one or 2 other parts that are also exempt. Am i just better off buying a new car? Maybe the GTO with the 5.7 and S/C it (for some reason its carb exempt) or do you guys got ne suggestions to what i can do to put some nuts in the mule?

The GM Supercharger for the 2.4 TC motor works on Autos as well. It has nothing to do with your transmission. Your reflash has to deal what your transmission type is (if you get one).

how much would the reflash cost? i am sure putting in the s/c is fairly easy...(all though i have not done anything mechanical to these computer ran cars besides change the air filter) i know that i definately would have to take a trip to the dealership to get some sort of reprogramming. is that what u mean by reflashed? can you still run a CAI and an exhaust? I dont want an exhaust that says "Look at me, ya wanna race??" i want to keep my car as stock as possible on looks and sounds but i want it to inhale and exhale good too.

To be honest, there are people out there that will try and race you no matter if you're modified or stock...they'll even race dump trucks if they think the driver wants to go for it lol

you gotta point (especially in cali) people race some slow ass cars there. I looked up the supercharger and it puts the power to 190, so if i throw a CAI and an exhaust, i could possibly run about... 210? maybe more?

Trust me, that's everywhere with a bit of population.

As far as HP amounts...you can never really tell. Also, with an supercharger, it's better to have a regular "in the engine bay" setup (WAI) with a supercharger. Trying to get cooler air outside is pointless because it's going to still get hot from the supercharger and plus the supercharger needs immediate airflow.

Well as far as the S/C goes, i would mount it in the position that it is supposed to be. Would i have to modify a CAI to make it work or does the S/C kit come with one? i hate california emissions crap. makes everything a pain in the a$$

I hate Cali too and I don't even live there lol

I belive the supercharger is setup to run off the stock intake system (as far as the tubing part and air box) but you can easily modify an aftermarket tubo to accomodate it.

So i can modify by means of a hacksaw.. hehe. Well now all i need is the price of the supercharger kit and the cost to reflash..humm. i guess i can go to my dealers website to figure that one out. Any ideas as far as exhaust goes? It looks like i am going pacesetter for header, dunno if i can swap out the stock cat for high flow cat and then put a maybe a borola exhaust or something on there. Just dont want it to be hella loud, california cops like loud cars, gives them an excuse to check my stuff out.. lol. My current muffler has 2 pipes out the back of the muffler. so if i go something like 2 or 2.5 could i go to one? or could i dual it and spread the pipes out to each side?

Your stock exhaust system is just about 2", under s/c I would suggest 2 1/2" but I don't know how that will conflict with your emissions, loudness etc etc

I would do 2 1/4" to be safe.
