I am wondering what set up you guys have on your car as far as a combination of CAI and exhaust systems goes and are you able to pass a smog test with it?
I was looking into an AEM intake, Part number: 22-445, the carb exemption number is: D-392-18. I want to see what kinda header and exhaust system i can run with the Air intake and still pass smog (and not have a extremely loud exhaust). Thanks a lot everyone
I would talk to Inari about this situation...
www.kronosperformance.com / 732-742-8837
catback exhaust has no relativity to emissions
the only thing is you have to keep the exhaust note below 95 db , or you will get hassled for it
and in cali LOUD is VERY BAD
header only pacesetter's is carb approved
intake aem and injen , maybe weponR are carb approved
So i couldnt do a cam swap or port my head or anything else?
you might be abel to get away with the cam swap , and minor porting to the head
you dont want to go over board , because any codes and you will fail emissions , plus if they test at the tail pipe , to large on any of the above and you might get screwed
alright well this is as far as I know...
You cannot have a CEL if you hope to pass smog, that's a fact of life.
Performance parts must be carb legal and come with a CARB number or an EO number which basically means it passes certain tests and earns the right to be called CARB legal
I've heard of people getting away with secret cams, they're close enough to stock to be considered a pretty mild upgrade also. I'm not very experienced with Wilder cams though. And some head porting.
My situation is a strange one... I'm actually still a resident of nevada, right down to my driver's license and pretty much all of my bills and legal fees, including school fees and such. As far as the state is concerned (and as far as I know) I'm still a nevadan. That being said, I get some leway..... I've only been pulled over once for having too loud of an exhaust, but I didn't get asked to pop my hood. My intake manifold and air intake system are both illegal. Period.
That's another thing you want to worry about, if you work on your car... make sure everything is up to spec. I got pulled over for a burned out bulb believe it or not.
Also, noise regulations. I believe the limit is 95 give or take a decible and a half. They can pull you over on sheer assumption that your exhaust is too loud. No they do not have to test it, it's their call, so no point in arguing the facts unless you have some legal proof that your exhaust is in fact under the DB limit. I keep my exhaust sound test in my car at all times just in case.
Pacesetter is CARB legal. I believe there is another header company that is CARB legal but the name escapes me at the moment.
Well... let's just put it this way... you can't mod a lot... this will help you on your path.
http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html
Read through that and check the links...
Well If I've missed anything I'm sure someone will put it up. Good luck man, California has to be the worst place for mods....
I'm not much of a rule breaker.... but...
it's only illegal if you get caught.... Not to sound malicious... but that's just how it is.
Good luck.
Yeah the time i would get caught would be in may. My car is in its 5th year so it gets its first smog this time around. What a waste of a hundred bucks or so huh? Wished i lived in texas or something. i heard you can do a lot there. I was reading up on the GTO and they have a carb legal supercharger (not gm made) And it gives a good amount of extra power to the goat. I was thinkin on maybe going that direction. I dont know yet. I will find out when i go back to the states in 2 weeks
it all depends if your picked for a "TEST only center".. if you are not some of the random they select the rest can b kinda lenient.. if you go to test only center you will have to be damn near stock i had to go take my intake off n crap. Before i just went to anyplace because i didnt get chosen for test only with my intake and exhaust it passed.
and if your paying more then a hundred dollars for a smog your out of ur mind its usually between 30-50 tops. Also if your worried about waisting 100 dollars i highly doubt you have money for a gto
People don't like spending money brandon, any amount of money.
Not everything they have is bought for them....
100 bucks = a good chunk if you pay rent or bills.
Maybe you like wasting 100 bucks, so just leave the guy alone on that.
Anyways. Let us know how the smogging goes when it goes down.
Hi there guys. Although I live in the Atlanta area, we have to pass the California IM240 emissions tests. I have an AEM cold air intake, and pace setter header on my
'03 Cav, and it passed just fine. The Pace setter header has a CARB #, on a plate
attached to a tube i think. I have the ceramic coated version. The AEM cold air intake i got in the polished silver finish, but for emissions i use water based flat black paint and wash it off after. Works like a charm. There's several areas that use the IM240 with the rolling dyno aside from CA, so beware of what you do to the drivetrain.

r u stupid? ive bought everything FOR my cars including my cars.
I said waisting 100.00 on a smog is ridiculous. Smogs usually go for 30-50.00
Read before you jump on my ass just because i have @!#$ on my car dont go assuming it was all given to me.
...but if he's worried about spending $100 you assume he can't afford a GTO?
You're the dip@!#$ here......but it's not the first time on here, so I won't worry.
Since you have an '01 Z24, another CARB legal option for you is the GM Supercharger kit.
that's the route I'm taking ^^^^
^^^yeah, and one I wish I could.
lol theres tons of people who are all talk on here "ill upgrade from a cavalier to a viper"
ah my cavalier wont pass if its s/cd so ill go buy a car that costs 20x as much just because i can

Seriously...where the hell did that come from. Just because the guy mentions a GTO with a supercharger...
Go jack someone elses thread Brandon.
I didnt mean to sound like a cheap a$$ or anything. Just that 4G for a supercharger that only adds 40HP for a total of 190 is pointless. I just think its more worth spending that much to get a car where an S/C can really perform and still be within standards of cali's emission regs. Oh and yeah, considering that i have not been california, let alone the states for over 3 years, geez guy give me some leinency here. Last time i saw smog check prices it was near the 100 dollar mark. Maybe it was just in bakersfield (they love to price gouge people out there) for a certain time.
Oh and yeah, you gotta admit,, being able to S/C a GTO to 460hp+ and it be legal in california is definately an investment worth looking into. If anyone wants to know more about that, i got a little info for it. hehe. And yes i still love my Cavi...definately gets better mileage then the 90 caddy i had before.. haha.

Where did you get 190 from? I highly doubt you're just gaining 40 HP. You have upgrade pulleys that can raise it to about 9-10 PSI of boost if you wanted to, so 40 HP seems like an out of the question kind of #. Also, where did you get $4,000 for the supercharger kit? It's far less money for the 2.4 kit.
Don't let Brandon bother you...really...he's no one to be talking about someone else.

I was just informed by Inari that it gives gains to about 200 HP...even still you have upgrade pullies out there to raise that significantly.

yeah but then you gotta switch em back for smog so its not in violation of CARB exemption crap. I forgot where i saw the system for around 4 grand. its been a while since i really looked at it. Here is the info for the s/c straight up from GM performance parts website:
12498287 2.4L Twin Cam Supercharger
Application:
2000 - 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.4 L (RPO - LD9) with Manual Transaxle (RPO- M86)
2000 - 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.4L (RPO - LD9) with Manual Transaxle (RPO - M94)
2000 - 2002 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4 L (RPO - LD9) with Manual Transaxle (RPO- M86)
2000 - 2002 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4L (RPO - LD9) with Manual Transaxle (RPO - M94)
This integral "roots-type" supercharger and manifold design was developed to maximize both engine horsepower and torque without sacrificing durability. Vehicle Control Module (VCM) calibration is a key factor in both performance and driveability. This supercharger has its own unique calibration designed specifically for 2000 to 2002 model year 2.4L Twin Cam engines. Being an integral design gives the supercharger a "clean" factory look and more importantly, it's GM factory engineered. The GM Performance Part kit is the only supercharger that has met GM Engineering standards. The 2.4L Twin Cam Supercharger has undergone more extensive testing and tuning than any other power-adding device. If your goal is to make a reliable 190 HP and add over 40 lb/ft of torque with your 2.4 Twin Cam, this is the only way to go. The end result is a reliable, compact powertrain that has more power than many V6 engines.
The kit includes:
- All mounting brackets and all mounting fasteners required for installation.
- All air ducts and adapters including new PCV hoses, baffle and tubes required for installation.
- Gen II Map Sensor, four spark plugs, accessory drive belt required for installation.
- Recalibration of the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) is also included in the kit.
Easy Installation:
Normal technician's hand tools are all that's required to install this supercharger kit (recalibration of the on-board vehicle control module must be done at an authorized GM dealership). Skilled technicians can easily complete a full installation in a single day.
The 2.4L Twin Cam Supercharger Kit carries a warranty covering the complete kit for defects in material and workmanship for a period of 12 months or 12,000 miles from date of installation. In addition to the product warranty, this supercharger kit will cover the powertrain (internally lubricated engine and transmission components) for the length of the original factory powertrain warranty. For specific details contact your local GM Performance Parts dealer.
What kinda pullies would i need? i still want my alt. to produce enough power for my stereo system. i heard that some pullies will cause the alternator to rotate slower. I would have to get a bigger battery to be safe. I could always buy the same type of battery that they use in the figher planes. they are optima's but they are like hella bigger and capable of more power.. hehe.
OK, so that's about $1,200 less than you originally thought though. Doesn't look that bad for what you're looking for (as far as emissions).
