i was just wondering if the secret cam swap is a reliable upgrade or will it cause porblems and what kind of gains can be expected?
It is a fairly mild increase in cam profile (lift/duration), and also on stock GM cams, so yes, it is reliable, and should give a small but noticeable gain in power, especially if you have done some other mods that will also help increase airflow through th motor (intake/exhaust).
Because it is a 4V/cyl. motor, and also OBD2, it will be very sensitive to changes in lift, and moreso, duration, but these cams are mild enough that you will be fine. Only a little more duration will start to cause cel, and idle problems.
Hope that helps.
Doing the secret cam setup is a pretty decent gain for a factory cam swap. It works best with a ported head. Many people running stock ports will post complaining about power gain lacks, and just like porting them with stock valvetrain, it'll give you a gain, especially with a more aggressive profile camshaft.

thanks for the info i was kinda hoping to do the swap within the next week or so but now theres this ported head matter . how much do you figure it'll cost aguy to have the head ported on a 2.4 ?

depends on the machine shop. best guess is about $200 for a port and polish, doing everything the right way

im assuming this means you have to take apart the head and take it in or does ashop do all that ? how long shouldthis take

it'd be cheaper if you disassembled your had and had it bare, ready for them to do. but seriously, you should just save up a little bit and make it a head project. replace your valvetrain with aftermarket. and as far as time goes, not very long for them to do it if they have bare head to work with.

no problem man. our site is is a sleeper project tech forum / whoring palace / Kansas City street racing scene supporter. I coordinate all the good meets and host all the videos on my server for our local action. Feel free to drop by and stay a while. In regards to your cam project, you can do it that way too, just save the major part for a rainy day... or week lol. You should be happy with the cam upgrade, and then once you get a PnP done, even more happy

Go for the swap.
Esp if you're there when its being done.
Its fun to see, you get to learn more about the car, and its pretty safe to do from the computer standpoint.
Besides, there are so many opitons for headers now, choose to get one you'll feel gains.
Then add in the catback, little more gains.
Maybe an HO or Venom manifold.....a little more gains.
Then finally when you're ready for the juggular (sp?) go for the P&P.
Its a process, but worth it in the end.

Remember....syringes go in the RED waste basket.
Well looking at your mods, you have the header and catback.
So yes, go for the swap.
Then down the road go for the P&P.
Try to source a spare head that way you don't have to take your car outta service.
Have fun,

too bad i dont live in kansas city im way up intha igloos in edmonton ,alberta .however its ironic you guys do sleeper projects cause my car happens to be a sleeper . ill have to get some pics going but i just got my digi camera and im not very computer literate so im not sure how to go posting pictures yet or put them on a computer for that matter!
oh i also need to clarify the part # on the exhaust cam for the swap i want to order my parts today but i seem to have 2 part #"s for the exhuast cam is it 22545390 or is it 24570698? and the intake camshaft is 24574239 that should be correct right?
GM parts direct is the way to go:
24574239 Intake camshaft for LG0(95 2.3DOHC) $197.64
22545390 Exhaust cam for LD2(Pre-95 2.3DOHC) $197.64

you could get lucky and junkyard them. I got really lucky when I did at least. The problem is finding that damn intake cam, I think 95 was the only year where the quad series Vin D motors had the power steering pump driven by cam and not by a pulley.
sorry for the double post.
I forgot to mention that that year also had the Cam position sensor on there also... I believe.
great! hope to get this project rollin soon as possible thanx again for the help
good luck
mine are very nice paperweights.
Speaking of P&P with the cams, how does that affect the PCM? Is it ok with mods like such?
inari ,i was checking out your engines pics nice intake manifold what did you do to it and whats that little filter that sits just on top of your intake manifold

That looks like a breather filter. It also looks as if hes got the HO 2.3L Intake Manifold as well. I personally would hook into the Manifold if i could. In fact, my AEM Short Ram Intake hooks into my Air Oil Seperator.
sorry, air breather filter?,hook into manifold ? explain please.
no. that's actually my crank breather. it plugs onto the hose that should normally go back into the intake manifold or intake (that's if I still had the stock plastic manifold and an aftermarket short ram intake)
probably not the best thing to have there but I know a few people who have done it that way. I like it, I don't see too many problems with it. but that's another topic for another post.

the PCM is responsive. it should not throw a code. make sure you reset it though.

so thats the little rubber hose running from the crankcase to the air intake tube ? is it bad to do that or is it just for looks
hasn't caused me any problems. maybe the occasional need to wipe my idi cover a little bit from oil residue from the vapors that escape. but it's a looks thing for me.
