Building a quiet exhaust?
Monday, December 19, 2005 9:54 PM
Since I now have an exhaust cutout I'd like to get my exhaust redone and I'd like the end result to be as quiet as possible while retaining functionality, my supercharged 2.4 needs to breath.

When I had the cutout installed I told the owner of the shop what I wanted and he was at a loss of words as to what products could be used to produce a silent exhaust system, I guess because those that want custom exhausts usually want it to be loud, so I'm just polling the Org to get some ideas on products that would be used.

I'm a bit confussed...

Do you want it quiet while the cut out is open or closed?

I would recomend a Dynomax superturbo muffler. they flow fairly well and aren't much louder than stock in my opinion.

Dynomax are pretty quiet. Probably what I'm going to get, since I want my exhaust to be quiet.

I think it is Event who has a resonator, and two magnaflow mufflers on his car. That should be fairly quiet too. That system looks really good.

you people arn't giving him the information he needs.
JUGGALO.>>>>>>>..... if you want your exhaust to be quiet, you need to pay attention to the SIZE of the muffler. the bigger the quieter. in magnaflows.. they make 14" 18" and 24 i think. mabye even a 30". get AT LEAST the 18".24" will be more like stock. with a resonator it should be barly noticable. if you go with flowmasters, they rate by series, and i think it's like a 60 or 70 series they have that is suppose to be stock replacment mufflers. but flowmasters actually flow pretty $hitty. again, just look at the length in inches of the actual casing of the muff. getting into the 20's is being pretty damn quiet

Ok. YOu want queit. Then don't get any muffler. Any muffler could mean straight through design and that is not going to be quiet.

You want to get a Dynomax Superturbo( I forget the part number for it), a 2.25 ehaust or 2.5 (your choice) the a resonator as long as you can get it. I have a 29" resonator. You do that and it will be quiet.

The resonator and muffler is what keeps your exhaust tone quiet. I would suggest going with larger piping but keeping the factory muffler and resonator.

You get larger piping which will help your 2.4L breath but you also get the quiet that OEM has to offer. You have a cutout so just use that when you plan on racing.

Any other suggestions on products? I'm hearing DynoMax TurboSport muffler, what about resonator brands? Is there much of a difference between brands? I've still got the 14" Magnaflow resonator that was on the car.

Also, what about a cat? I need something small in size, cylinder in shape. I saw the Dynatech PowerCat on Jegs.com and it looks like it would be perfect... but it's got a $150 price tag. Then there are the round Magnaflow converters that look a little larger then the Dynatechs but are half the price, from Jegs anyway.

I have both muffler and resonator as the brand thrush.

a 25" thrush resonator and a thrush turbo muffler. I like how it sounds.

I would use the dynomax super turbo and a 25"+ resonator as stated above. You should be using a 2.5" exhaust also.

Yea, my current exhaust setup is 2.5", if you read my car profile.

i personally just got installed a pacesetter header, magnaflow cat, 31" thrush resonator, and dynomax super turbo muffler. i will say that it is DEFINITELY NOT as quiet as stock. nothing out there i believe is as quiet as stock. but, it definitely is a lot less noisy as a lot of other systems that are out there. i like it.

Well I'm just looking for something that's a lot quieter with a milder tone than what I have now. I realize I won't get something as quiet as stock. Now, where could I get parts from for the best price?

I guess the DynoMax TurboSport muffler, the Dynatech PowerCat, and some resonator 24"+ long, but I can't find resonators anywhere.

summit has resonaters.
They're called glasspacks though.
Thrush, Summit, you name it, they have it.
As for your cat Magnaflow part# 94036. Get it from justmagnaflow.com.
Less than 80 bucks.

BTW. How do you like the cut out? Ive been flirting with the idea for some time now. Only thing holding me back is the supposed loss of TQ. Have you noticed a substainal loss?

Most guys use the magnaflow 94035, I am not sure what is different about the 94036. Unless thats a typo.

The best quiet exhaust system is made by Chevy and it came on the car.

I think it was turbo tech or a plus performance that had magnaflow's in stock. I have a dynomax resonator.
