I need a motor. Or maybe a car.
Monday, December 19, 2005 10:56 AM
So I was asking the other day about the best motor options because my engine is showing its age. Over the weekend I was having some brake issues and trying to figure all that out.WHile I was at it I decided to do an oil change and I found some metal shavings in the oil pan, and I'm betting I'm about to toss a bearing or something along those lines. The engine is still running, but who knows how long that will last, so I'm looking for a motor or maybe another car. Right now, I have an LN2 in a '97 Cavy. I've been thinking about an LD9 or an older 2.3 Quad. I would prefer a Quad because I had built one in highschool when I had my Calais and loved it to death. I actually tried to track down the car since I sold it and it was junked last year and the motor has already been pulled and parted out. Anyway, I know the LD9 is easier to find, but what am I looking at as far as cost? I know I need to swap the tranny which is fine because mine is sh*t and needs rebuilt anyway. Is it just as cheap to sell this car and buy a Z24? I know almost nothing about the LD9 so I'm asking for some wisdom here.

if your wanting to build a NA engine then go with the HO quad ..its a direct bolt up so no problems there..and if you get a 95 z or GT you wont need any pcm's or wiring..but thats all your choice....im sure your gonna get like 100 differnt opinions before this is over but "this is my opinion..there are many like..but this one is mine"

Honestly, the Quad is a wet dream. I loved that engine. But I've done a little searching and it seems the Quad is going to be a ton of work even if I find one. Since it's an OBD1 engine, I know I'll need the harness, ECU, mounts, hoses, fuel lines, more than I can name, and not to mention a tranny. If I swap an LD9, I know I need the ECU and tranny, all the mounts, and I don't know about the harness, ignition, all that. Say I go with the LD9, since it's more common. I lack the abilities to do the swap - lack of space, proper tools, and general knowledge about these cars, so that means recruiting help, or a shop, and that costs money. At this point, I still wonder if I'm better off just buying a Z24 and ditching this stupid RS altogether.

It's the same job to sawp an Ld9 or a quad. If you really don't have the tools to do it, you're better finding a J with a 2.4. Doesn't need to be a Z24.

Well, I'm looking at probably 3K max to get a car or a driveline, so if I get the car, I think the Zs were the only model from 95-99 to come with an LD9. That said, I probably have a better chance getting the drivetrain and doing the swap. I'm going to be moving back to Des Moines and I have a friend there that's a GM mechanic, maybe he'll be willing to help me. I reroofed his house for him so he owes me. So is there a FAQ on here that gives me a list of what I will need to swap the LD?

Sounds like you might getting crank walk like I am. Its a good chance the shavings are from your thrust bearing. more so if its a 5 spd. If its not knocking dont sweat it to bad at the moment, I've seen them run quite a while that way. Good luck on whatever you decide tho.

Crankwalk?! Great, that's just what I need. Almost as much as I need a live grenade in my pants. Ok, so I drive the car around as is until the f'n thing eats itself. Then it'll be time for a new motor. I do believe that motor will need to be an LD9. So I searched last night for a parts list of what I'll need to put in an LD9, or a how to or something, and only found little bits of what I already know. So, I'll ask again, is there ANYONE in here that's done the swap before, that can tell me what I'm going to need? If I'm going to go the swap route and get a crash course in GM Hell, I'm gonna need to study a bit.

You will need engine bay wiring, motor, tranny. I think (but not 100 the tranny mounts are the same. I have a 1997 2.4, that needs rebuild. It has 72k on it, spun a bearing. Motor has never been opened except for water pump change.
