Hey guys, since I am one of the many with a sick fascination with the OHV, I started compiling a true build guide today. Something with more than just parts and where to get them, but a guide that can take people from start to finish in how to build an engine for all-motor, boosted, or juiced setups. I've already included the engine specs from NY-Jbodies (credit given of course), and started on basic overviews of what the strategy for each different build should be.
What I'd like to request from all of you guys, is any information you feel should be included. If you have pictures or diagrams, little known information, links to threads with good discussions, what parts are known strengths and weaknesses, anything, please email them to me at Jersey_Jay_0284@yahoo.com, or IM me through BlvdUvBrknDr3amz on AIM.
This guide will be massive when completed, breaking down how to port the head, balance the engine, what parts to choose for which application, flowbench data, dynos, turbo compressor match maps, etc. I'm shooting to be as comprehensive as possible, which is why I'd really love to see all of the bigshots of the OHV scene contribute a little something.
Whats funny is i don't know which will be done first, my build or the build guide lol....

Very nice, step by step process there. Reading that and looking through the pics really makes me think about doing the exact same thing eventually. I can't imagine that a 2200 engine is really all that expensive at a junkyard either...
Also I thought that pretty much any engine was too heavy to just manhandle like that. You're saying that it's possible to lift and carry (for at least a short distance) a 2200? If you're talking 200 pounds, I suppose that's possible...gonna make you hella sore, but possible, yeah.
You do have a copy of GM's build guide, right? It's on PJ's server. Read it for information on head work, crank modifications, rod choices, etc. Then weed out what's inappropriate.

Weird, I had just opened up a new document to do the exact same thing when I saw this thread...
I think the most important thing to put in there would be what parts can be shared between then 2.2L and 2200, and what can be adapted from one to the other (intake, header...possibly head).
Next make sure to include all the threads about the top-feeds for the 2.2L guys, and the 1.8L double roller timing chain thread would be good too. I know juicedZ had a pretty good thread with his build, and there's another pretty good one from lowfire. I'm sure when you get to the turbo section you'll remember PJ's thread on reading a compressor map (so that you don't have to type it all out again).
The one thing I see wrong with this is the pure complexity. I think we need something pretty basic to easily answer most of the questions that get asked, because I know these lazy-ass newbies won't search through something this big. Although, I guess you could just start off with that stuff.
I also have spare engines and lots of aftermarket parts laying around if you need pictures or measurements of anything. I'm going to be thoroughly porting a head starting in a week or so, so I can provide pictures along the way of that if needed.
Oh, the "2200 power record" thread has some info about problems using the Howell rockers on the JBP valvetrain that may come in handy as well.

Alright, just to clarify some things: this is a build guide strictly for the 2.2 and 2200 found in the J-bodies. Yes, all of the pertinent information from GM's old OHV guide (anything still relevant) will be included.
Notec, you're right, it is going to be complex. But one thing to keep in mind is that I'm going to write this as a Word file... from there on out i may well go and adapt it to another format so that the whole file can be downloaded directly and printed to read. With just the basic introduction, the mechanical specs, and the first half of the tuning strategies its 10 pages long on Word in size 12 font lol... So yes, its going to be huge. but I will do my best to break it down into a step by step process. In fact, I may end up making it a website so that its easier to navigate in addition to a downloadable file.
The point of this guide will be not only to show where to buy aftermarket parts (to be honest, that will probably be the smallest section of the guide) but how to to do as much of the work by oneself so as to really save money. Things like how to DIY port the head and balance the bottom end.
If Tony is willing to help work with us on dyno time and Oyyci doesn't mind being a lab rat of sorts, then we can also quantify the gains from some of the bolt ons out there and include those dynoes in the guide.
To the guy asking about auto stuff, not that transmission will be totally left out, but its more of a build guide for the engine itself. I'm not going to go into nearly as much detail with that stuff as i am with the actual engine build. Especially since I have zero firsthand experience with the J-body auto transmissions. My goal is to show people how to make power, perhaps in the future someone will write a detailed guide on how to transfer said power to the wheels.
Thanks to the people who have given links and offered help so far. I'm very inspired by the response to this so far. This is a HUGE project, so when I get home I'm going to outline the whole guide (something I should have done before I started but was feeling inspired so i jumped right in), and I'll post the outline here for constructive criticism and also if anyone would like to perhaps write an article to be included in a section they can do so. I'm going to be writing this as i proceed with my build on PJ's old engine (traitor!
), so I'll be getting a good amount of experience as I go, but obviously everyone here has different and equally valuable experiences to be shared. Anyway, i'm still at work so i have to wrap this up, I will post again when I've come up with an outline for the project.

You've probably seen the cam work I've been dealing with, Ithink I might be able to help out with VI. A. Camshaft Selection. Probably some other valve train realited items also.
If things work out right, I'll have an engine and head to do some measuring work with here soon.
MadJack, that would be great. Since the Beetle has really been my first actual performance car (wow that sentence sounds so wrong lol)... BUt the 1.8T is blessed with cams that are good until well over 350 hp... so outside of a basic idea of how the valvetrain operates, I really have very little experience in that area and anything you have to offer would be great.
