casper o2 sim question??? car bogging out!!!!
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 7:25 PM
First my problem... my 2.2L '96 cavalier is lagging bad on take off into 2nd gear. As if it trying to stall out. Many say that the casper O2 sim will fix this problem.
My setup... OBX 4-2-1 HEADER, NGK IRIDIUM PLUGS, COLD-AIR INTAKE (SHORT), DUAL CATBACK EXHAUST, 16 INCH RESONATOR, AND NO CATALYTIC CONVERTOR. original factory one was rotted out and was easier to replace with the resonator. I am wondering what the problem may be and how to fix this problem. New parts consist of altenator, starter, plugs, wires, battery.
thank you

Buy a damn catalytic converter. The Casper o2 sims don't work very well, if at all. Get a Magnaflow 2.25" in/out cat and be done with it. Your not gaining anythign by not having a cat, in fact your probably losing power. Also, while your at it. take off the goddamn wing, roof scoops, body kit, and graphics. Maybe that why your car is bogging down. It hates you for putting all that crap on it. That is all.

You need Carsound / Magnaflow Catalytic Converter part number 94035

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

from what Ive seen removing the cat doesnt make you lose power as long as your o2 sensor is on ur headers and not the cat itself. A friend of mine has an SL2 removed the cat and burns out now while shifting gears which he wasnt able to do before. On my Cousins cavy he removed his cat and got some power from it. Now with my other friend's Teggy his o2 sensor was on his cat so he replaced it with a test pipe and he didnt get a difference because his o2 sensor was attached to the cat opposed to it being attached to the headers like most domestics.

Location of the 02 sensor has nothing to do with that. The first measures lean vs ritch, and the second one is measuring the efficiency of the cat.

The reason your losing power is that unless you have a turbo setup, you need back pressure from the exhaust.

Removing the cat isn't going to make your car all the suddenly capable of burning out while shifting thru gears. Your not going to gain that much torque.

Do you have dyno numbers to back this up?

First and foremost...thank you for the answers that are beneficial to my problem. Second...all who have to be asses and leave bad replies can F*** off. We come here to this site to find answers from others who might know and share our experiences with one another. So as for you They Call Me...Baby Gorilla my ride is by far better than your 95 2.2L hands down. I am building mine for appearance and creativity. If I wanted a fast car I would own an import. Bottom line... all j-bodies cut off @ 105mph. Not 120 or 140 or even 160mph! with a turbo....105. with an aftermarket intake that goes to the ground too...105mph. with all the engine mods you can imagine plus nitrous oxide too...ONE HUNDRED FIVE (105) MILES PER HOUR!!!
Again thanks for those who do offer the support we look for amongst the members here.

first of all, all j;s cut out at 108....

some with removal of governor for those smart enough to search for the info have been up to mid 120s and some into the 130;s...

secondly... lack of a cat can slow exhaust gases, i've posted the link to magnaflows site more than 100 times in the past two years, easy to find...

3) when exhaust gases slow, things stagnate.... imagine yourself being constipated...engines do the same.

you cutting out can be from the sensor....easy fix... and dont take it personally....DONT half arse build your exhaust...

there are cars on here with turbos, nitrous, and highly built n/a cars that DO NOT USE NOR NEED and O2 sim. they have no check engine lights.

your mods:

Engine:

AEM Intake
OBX 4-2-1 header
NGK Iridium spark plugs

do not in ANY way warrant having a need for an o2 sim... it would be alot easier to simply build the exhaust correctly for the same price, actually gain some power from doing so, and not have a light, than waste 30-50$ on some BS simulator of which costs just as much as a cat...

so in thoughts...30-50$ for an o2 sim from casper, 20-30 for a resonator

50-80 dollars for a bullcrap "allegedly cheap fix"

or simply pay 50$ for a properly functioning catalytic converter...

its always cheaper when you dont half arse things, and then have to go back and do what you cheaped out on....

doesnt matter if you show or race. its still the same

First off, I have an '02 2200 motor, not a '95 2.2. Second, I whole-heartedly agree with what Event just posted. Third, there are alos major legal repercussions fo removing the catalytic converter from a vehicle originally equipped with on. The EPA can take your car, fine you up the arse, and you even face the possibility of jail time if it is found that you removed it knowing it was illegal to do so.

I was going to try and help you on this, until I read this response.
I think a lot of people are wrong about not running cats. I'm not running one. Also no CEL from it either.
What point did you try to make above? How fast a car is has nothing to do with where the speedlimiter is. I have seen J's run 113mph in the 1/4 on stock motors. If you know anything, you know that is a 12 second MPH.
Go grow up and learn some things, then maybe you will get some help.
