Subframe connectors

anyone ever thought of adding subframe connectors to the thirdgens to improve the ridgity of the frame. we used to do it to most of the performance thirdgen fbodies we drove. i know some people on this board own thirdgen fbodies and thirdgen jbodies, so jump in...

for those who dont know thirdgen fbodies are 82-92 camaros/z28/IROC and firebird/trans am/GTA etc.

You mean a subframe brace? I have one currently being considered to strong. So i have to weaken it, because if i hit something with it, i will break something other then the bar im using.

Here the discussion: http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=3&i=99940&t=99940

RKSport makes one, I think freedom desings makes one as well... the smartpeople make there own, the smart people without the right tools have Ken2.2 make them one.

El Fuego, you got the measurements and the parts for the subframe you made?

The subframe brace is 1" Perforated steel tube, 10 gauge and 31 inchs long. Check my link for details and do a search, the DIY instructions are around somewhere.

Could you make one out of copper pipe so it would be strong but would bend if you hit something? That may sound dumb...

I don't think copper pipe would be strong enough to do anything.

I don't think the original poster was referring to subframe braces. More likely he's talking about the subframe connectors that run front to back (connecting the front of your car to the back). That's what we use on the SHOs at least...

Thought you didnt need them on UNIbody cars.

That probaly are more benifical on rwd cars because it stops the frame from twisting.

You need them MORE on unibody cars...it basically builds a frame where we don't have one.
People that have them on their FWD SHOs swear by them in the corners...

so would it be beneficial to build some. I'm thinking i might because i can feel the flex in these cars.

so far, here are my plans before i build some.

rear sway bar
tie bar to connect the rear sway bar
rear strut tower brace
front strut tower brace
subfram connector

ill see what the car feels like after these, but the body roll feels unbelieveable. there is way too much to be useful.

also, i think im going to upgrade the front sway bar, as people say that the factory one is close to useless...

Do you think a double wide version of my subframe brace would work? Of coarse it would have to be longer.
