Pulley Explanation
Monday, October 24, 2005 4:32 AM
Ok, I hate it when people post w/ out searching. I've done my part for the past couple days fart'n arround in searches and in the stickey forum trying to find some answers to a few questions.

I/ve had the underdrive pulley for a couple years, which i know messes with the charging system. I'm up for a new alternator now, and want to correct the problem.

Now i know that the unorthodox pulley from RSM is lighter and the same diameter as stock to avoid the charging problem. My question is, what is the AEM tru power kid considered? Is it an underdrive crank pulley plus an oversized alternator pulley? And does this AEM system mess come with charging issues too? I'm asking because of the price difference. RSM's one unorthodox pulley is in the high 100's while you can get the AEM pulley kit w/ 2 pulleys for arround 60 on e-bay.

first off dont always trust the pictures you see. The aem pulley is just a alternator pulley and im not sure if being a oversized pulley means its under or over drive. Im assuming underdriving since it takes more area to turn it one full revolution. your best bet is to get the pulleys from rsm cause there stock size so doesnt harm charging system at all and its lighter then stock.

Can't you use the AEM alternator pulley along with the underdrive pulley. Shouldn't that help with the power issues. I have been thinking about that for a while.

That's what I was wondering too. If I was to get the bigger alternator pulley would it compensate for the lesser diameter of the underdrive crank pulley.

/\ /\ /\ No if you went bigger on th ealt pully it would only slow it down more. You'd want to get a smaller alt pully that way it would spin it faster and charge better.

Good luck

Ok,
I running an auto 2.4 with the Unorther 2 inch smaller crank, and AEM 2 inch larger alt pulley.
The belt is factory sized as a result.

As for charging, since the AEM pulley is larger, the altenator is taking longer to charge up.

So when I'm sitting at a stop light or something, the lights will go dim.
Once I get going, everything brightens up like normal until I slow down...

Then I upgraded to a 4 awg high strand wire form ww.knuknceptz.com
Used the allen key ned link.
Don't get it twised, that high strand grade wire is PHAT. I was cutting for a minute to ge tthe desired length.

The lights STILL dim at stop lights, but not as quickly as with the factory 8 awg wire.
Same token as the lights get to their brightness faster

Meantime, as for performance, I can feel the car struggling less to get up in RPMs or whatever, so that's fun.

Hope that answers some questions for you.

Ya, i have that charging issue too when i pull up to the stops. The lights will go dim, and as of about a 6 months ago my head unit cuts out, or if it doesn't my 6x9s start distorting until i get back over 1000rpm. Recently though my radar detector (which is in a way my jimmy rig voltmeter) starting shutting off and on at the light telling me the battery was get'n low. I just bought a new battery about 5 months ago, so i know it's the alternator witch is still the factory one from 97. On top of that, i know my underdrive pulley isn't helping the problem out any. I was think'n of going with a HO alternator, but i don't think that underdrive pulley can do the job of spinning it enough to charge properly.

just get a smaller pulley for the alternator. getting a HO alternator might help some but the problem is that its just not spinning fast enough at idle. i think a new belt and pulley will be just a little bit cheaper than getting a new alternator.

Seriously, the best of the best is the RSM lightweight. They don't mess with charge and they don't cost all that much more than the unorthodox setups. Only set I can think of for cheaper is the Jtuner power pulleys, and they are underdrive and cause some issues with charging from what I have heard.
