As the title suggests, is it possible to gain 15 hp from just an intake and catback exhaust? This is mainly for my clarification and others that wish to purchase their first mods.
Is it possible for any 4 cylinder to gain 15 hp from I/E? Or more specifically, an ecotec or 2.4L tc.
Lets try and keep this to fact only, not opinion.
Documentation would be helpful.
hard to say really .. they have so many ways you can do that . cold air , warm air ... cat no cat ... piping to big not big enough . its almost impossable to determine hp gains . every car is different . now lets say you have a cold air intake with the filter in the bumber instead of the engine bay with a 4 tube long tubular header with high flow cat and 2 1/4 exhaust with straight through muffler . i would say maybe 10 - 16 hp ... like i said though , every engine is different . exact numbers for gains is just too hard to say . take it to a dyno and see what it is . it will run a lot better though i can tell you that . perform and sound better too . i hope this helped you somewhat .
Usually you wont see those kind of gains on a Eco or 2.4, Usually a intake and COMPLETE exhaust would probably get you 10 ponies, take or minus one or 2. But ANY 4 cyl? Ive heard that the Acura RSX type-S can get 15 horses just from a nice intake setup, I think the motor is a K20A ?

Intake and CATback exhaust only (any brand piping). Cai, short ram, the turbonator (lol), ect. Stock header and Cat.
IS IT POSSIBLE?
^^^^ That was a lil confusing to me but if your asking if you can achieve that with a catback and and a intake, regardless if its Warm or cold air, its very unlikely you will see that sort of gain.

What's confusing?
I think I said "15 hp from intake and exhaust?!?" 3 times in the original post.
Got any proof, graphs, logical explanations. Instead of it's "unlikely"
Not meaning to flame, I'm just trying to get some facts not opinions.
on a eco a header with a cat back and a warm air intake should put you there. dont forget to portmatch the intake manifold also. because every little bit helps
see ya!
i think you could gain 15 whp from a good intake and a header / catback full exhaust setup.

The hard the about it is that you can't necessarily say "Yes it's possible" or "No it's not possible" because every vehicle/motor is different and will react differentley. 1 car might gain 12 HP, another might gain 15, another might gain 9...there are too many variables. The only way to see how much power you gained is by dynoing, plain and simple.

About 18hp over stock, read the mods. Not every car is going to be the same.

Also depends on what kind of transmission you have. Automatics will lose more power going to the wheels than manuals (in stock form).

Though this may seem like common sense, both of these numbers should be FROM THE SAME CAR. Testing your car with mods and another car without mods IS NOT PROOF OF A DIFFERENCE. It's a simple process:- Dyno test your car in stock or "current" form
- Install the mods you wish to evaluate
- Dyno test the SAME car again
- Subtract the beginning number from the ending number to figure out your "HP Gained" number.
Not that tough, I think. THAT is proof that will stand on it's own.
agreed... blackeco, did you dyno your car before you did those mods to determine correctly that you gained an actual 18 hp?
an intake and only catback exhaust is extremely unlikely to get you a gain of 15 hp. with the stock header and pipe to the stock cat, that's still restricting the air flow quite a bit and you won't see nearly as much gain as if you did a full exhaust, replacing everything from the header back to allow better air flow through the whole exhaust.

Depends on how you look at it. Spend 400 on intake and exhaust and get about 15hp. Or get nitrous and make 50+ more hp. For 500.
You've either read too many RK Sport ads or have huffed too much nitrous. 15HP from an intake and exhaust? On a J? Put down the crack pipe and slowly back away...
That's funny, I have proof.
You argued this point to DEATH in the Versus forum, and now you have to ASK if it's possible? It's OK to admit when you don't know WTF you're talking about and ask honest questions..but to make a claim, ARGUE that claim, then come back and ask a question like this just makes you look stupid.
Stick to Versus. They'll believe you there without proof.
I already have done my research. I was going on here to get "respected" members facts/opinions. That is all. It's a question that YOU (jimmyz) and others including myself, need clarified. I already have several bits of proof.
Let's not ruin posts outside of versus. thanks.
so if you have the "proof", post it. don't ask questions, answer them.
I believe you did say any 4 cylinder. Maybe you can check for me.
And I did do a before and after of a kandn filter on the 05'.
121hp 127ft lbs stock at 7,000 miles with stock air filter. Everything stock. Then I put in the kandn air filter. Clean and dry (no oil). Power was increased to 126hp and 134 tq (I think)
So just 5 hp from a clean kandn filter. That little airflow improvement gave a decent gain for the money. Now here you are saying you only get 5 hp (somewhere around there) from and intake and exhaust.
Maybe YOU can show a little proof as to why we can't gain that much from these basic mods.
i can solve this argument. everyone. go and get boosted.

^^^ hell yeah bolton's aren't worth it !! How many J's with boltons and with full street trim you see in the 14's ? Yet some are hitting 15.3 stock ! Boost is where it's at ! (hopefully I'll get the money to get boost soon
)
