cam questions for the LO 2.3
Sunday, October 23, 2005 2:15 PM
I have read on the NYJBody website about the cam swaps that can be done on the 2.4 and on the 2.4 it is saying to use the intake cam out of the 95' LO 2.3 but for the exhuast cam it is saying to use the cam out of a 92'-94' 2.3 motor........

Will a 95' LO 2.3 binafit from leaving the intake cam but changing out the exhuast cam to the same exhaust cam that the procedures call for on the 2.4?

You will benefit but not much at all. The only difference between yours and the swap is that the exhaust cam has .015 more lift. Personally I am going to say its not worth the money. But this is completely opinonated and based on common sense. I may be completely wrong. Look at www.ny-jbodies.org for specifications on camshafts (It's in the library under 2.4L cam swap).

you would gain more with the Ho exhaust cam or the W41 cam

May best freind my be replacing the head on his 2.3 LO motor in his 95' Sunfire GT and I figured that if it was wirth the hp then we would swap the exhaust cam while we were in there? Would it be a good choice? Is it wirth buying the cam for the swap?

Maybe I didn't really understand your question... You are wanting to do a cam swap to your car or a 95 2.3L? If it's to your car disregard my previous comment. If it is to a 2.3L then the comment above is correct.

thank you it IS for my buddies 2.3 LO that we are going to by changing the head and maybe the exhaust cam.

Oh... Well personally I wouldn't do it unless the cam is going to be super cheap. But like I said I'm definately no know-it-all and it might make a world of difference. Judging by the specs I don't think it's going to do much.

im confused....your changing a head on a 95 2.3 Lo right?? and i HOPE your not putting a stock head back on...if your gonna pay the money to get a head i hope your getting a HO head like an 086..and while your at it just get BOTH cams to go with itall youll need to make it work is the HO power steering pump OR mill the cam to fit the existing one.....if you have a 95LO dont waste your time replacing LO parts with LO parts...
PS..for the money it takes for all this u could just swap the whole engine...or am i wrong??maybe im missing something??

Why would he want to do a whole cam swap when he would just be putting the exact same intake cam back in the car... The only one he would possibly want to swap is the exhaust. Or was that not what you are saying?

^

The 2.3 has alot of cam that you can use. He can use Both HO cams and get alot more poweer than just the exhaust cam. He could use a set of Crane cams too or even the W41 cams. All of them would give him alot more power.

Btw, it has to be a manual to swap both cams otherwise only swap the exhaust cam.

It is my car that we are doing the replacing to. I was just curious as to whether the LO had better low end than the HO? If it does than just swapping cams, the head, injectors and all that would give my LO better top end? Or DO I just need to do the whole motor? I just want the best of both, and I want to build this car to scream. As there are very few 2.3's still running. In the town that I live in, you get these kids that think they are the @!#$, because they can pull up in a V6 and think they are just tough. By the end of next year, I want my car to be able to take any 4 cyl. or V6 in this area. I know that is alot of work, money, effort, and patience, BUT it WILL BE DONE! I just need help on getting my car to this status. I am not trying to take first at NOPI, or nothing. I just want my car to run. Please help if you can.......Thanks!!!!!

It would be better if you swap the whole engine for an Ho.

I just want to state that with my aid in building and everyones help on here in designing the motor then "95 Sunfire GT In Progress" (Josh) WILL have one of the fastest if not THE fastest JBody in N.Central MO. I have devoted the last 4 years of my life to learning EVERYTHING I can about JBodies and the 2.4 motor. Now my best friend is trying to build his 2.3 to be the best that it can be. I hope we will have your support in our progress. Thanks in advance for anyone that will be helping us.

P.S. Gills,
You seem to know alot about the 2.3 motor so I am asking you in advance if you will help us in building the ULTIMATE 2.3 Sunfire GT.
