2.4 headers
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 9:13 PM
I am thinking of getting headers for my 2.4 but I'm not sure if, when they are getting installed if they have to remove the engine or not. if I do get some installed will it make the motor louder (by like how much) and how far does it cut your mileage?

all i know is that you do not have to take your motor out in order to install the header..as far as the motor noise goes when i modded my cav like intake, exhaust, motor mounts... it got pleasantly louder.

same as what the guy above said. though i havent done it on my 2.4L yet, i have talked to people that have and they said you can get to the bolts from above as it sits, after u take off the heat shield.

and P.S., since most of us have 4 cylinders here on the .org, its a "header", not "headers", unless you did a V-8 swap . infact there is only 1 header for most 4 cylinder engines.

anyways, i hope this helped, good luck.

He did not refer to one specific header, so I think his use of "headers" is valid.

he did however say 'when THEY are getting installed", everyone does it when they're new to the game. Hell first couple times I referred to them as 'headers'. You will notice a sound difference, which is good. I'd be suprised if you noticed a difference in Mileage, you'll be fine.

my porsche 944 has two headers, each two into one, then goes from a 2 into one downpipe into 1 exhaust

I am looking into getting a header for my car as well. I have been hearing alot about a flex pipe on these motors. Not really sure what it is but does it need to be replaced when you put the header on?

just did mine this last weekend, take out the heat shield and you can get to the nuts/studs.

you're gonna need;
10mm sockets, deep and regular, and B/O ended wrenches
13mm deep and regular and B/O ended wrenches
all kinds of extensions, the more the merrier (sp?)
a good universal won't hurt
PB penetrating spray, my favorite
your choice of tool to remove O2 sensor without destroying it
most importantly, time and patience

there is a bolt (10mm) that is in the drivers side of the block holding down a solid line, you will wanna take this out.

out comes the oil dipstick

cruise module is gonna get moved

i took everything off of the brake booster, makes it easier to get to the last nuts on the driver's side

wriggling the old one out is not as difficult as getting the new one in was, i think i was having a polish moment

you will probably have to bend the heat shield a little from underneath to get an extension in to nolt the downpipe to the header, this by far was the most fun i had all night

also it helps a great deal if you have someone around who can hyperextend their elbow about 25-30 degrees or so.

jack up the drivers side only at first to save your back while pulling old one and installing new

let me know if you need specific pics, i didn't take many at all while doing it but i can get them of areas you are unsure of

have fun and good luck, i think you will like it
