Cat-back VS. Custom
Friday, October 07, 2005 9:07 PM
Hey org, I've gotta question...Is there any power difference between mandrel bends and the normal kind (don't know what its called). I was thinking about taking a ride to Auburn, AL where i know some guys that have some mandrel bend machines, but thats like 1 3/4 hours away, so do you think it'd be worth the drive or do you think i should just get the megan cat-back? Also, i'm not really wanting to have a cat for i'm trying to build up for top-end HP, so i have an OBX header and i'm still undecided on megan cat-back or make my own....what do you think?

also, if i don't run a cat, is there anything i can mess up doing that? I heard you can mess up your head like that, but if i don't run a cat, can i do that spark plug fouler mod or whatever, really work?

The other kind is called compression bends, that's what you're probably thinking of. Mendrel bends are bent by a special machine where each bend is a PERFECT bend...so if you have a 2 1/4" piping, you bend it, at the bend it's still 2 1/4". Compression bends are more common to see and cheaper. Their bends are about as accurate as mendrel bends except there is a slight higher chance of the bend not being perfect, I believe it depends on the person bending it.

Cat-backs are expensive but easy bolt on yourself type projects.

Custom compression bent is alot cheaper but has to be done at a shop.

For top end power go for bigger piping.

Mandrel bends do not make to big of a difference until you are in the extreme ends of performance(most would agree that is the 400 and up hp range).

My advice go with compression custom bent piping at a local shop. I got mine down 2.5" catback with a flowmaster 40 series and a camaro tip put on.

Total cost: piping 90 bucks, flowmaster 50 bucks(i work at autozone discounts rule), 50 for my tip and a 30 dollar charge to weld my stuff in. The beauties of custom is you choose your muffler and your tip so you can mix and match more.

Warranties on custom work is also impostant mine has a lifetime warranty as long as i return to the shop for the guy to fix it. So find a good shop.

Hope it helps!

Don't take out your cat. It will not improve performance...it will only do negative things like:

1. Fail Emissions and Inspection
2. Be EXTREMELY loud
3. Depending on car, might lose some power

Thanx, NJHK, so do you think 2 1/2 piping and a cat, and what's the difference whether i were to get a flowmaster 40, or 60?

would that just give me more back pressure, or will it clear out the rasp?

You will need a resonator for no rasp.

It's no problem

For you, no motor work yet, no boost...go 2 1/4". Make sure you get a catalytic converter that matches up the same size as your piping (2 1/4" I recommend). The difference between the 40 and the 60 is the mainly sound but there are other differences...you can read more information about them here: Flowmaster Mufflers Info Page

I personally don't like Flowmaster mufflers just because of my problems that I had with their mufflers on my car. I had the 60 Series and one of them had something break inside and made a high pitch ringing noise...sounded terrible. Also they sounded like crap. I switched to Magnaflow mufflers...mmm...stainless steele sexy mufflers. Check Magnaflow out or Borla.

The type of muffler you get will help determine what kind of sound you will have but like Fire Fighter said...

Okay, well i have 2 1/2 compression bent on there now with two resonators a high flow cat and duals, but i wanted to go back to the single as for it's just more weight and no HP difference, and at once i didn't even have a cat, but it was really loud, but my topend was pretty badass

these are my mods:
2.3l mani
OBX header
exhaust (changing)
undeerdrive pulley,
and i'm waiting to get a lil more money to put the secret cams in

so do you still not think i should go with 2 1/2? I also need to replace my o2 sensor.....i heard you could loose power if the o2 gets burned out because it runs in loop mode, or something, is this also true, and do you still think 2 1/4? Thanx NJHK your helping me alot here......
