Max. addon can i put on and still pass smog
Monday, October 03, 2005 5:48 AM
I have a 2001 Cavalier Z24 with the 2.4L twin cam engine. i dont have any mods yet. i was lookin to put a CAI and tb spacer and possibly an exhaust on. I was also wondering about those power progammer things where you can set everything to how you want it, but when smog comes around switch it back. What is the most common set up out there that i can do and still pass californias stupid a$$ smog inspection? i dont want to mess around with bolting stock stuff back on in order to pass smog either. can anyone gimme pointers?

I know Md is supposed to have Cali's standards and here as long as your still running a cat and haven't removed any other smog stuff its ok. I have an 04 with an intake and I'm installing a header and 2 1/2 inch high flow exhaust this weekend but I'm still running a cat so I'll be fine. I would have to guess since we're supposedly running the same standards that this stuff should be fine for you too. Good luck

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

maybe off topic just a little, but don't waste your money on a tb spacer. Useless on a non-carbu car..

In Cali (the way I understand it) you can't make anymodifications to your exhaust system before the catalytic convertor (and including) that aren't CARB approved. That means that you can get a Pacesetter header, but that's it. AEM intakes may also be certified, but I'm not sure (they're a waste of money IMO anyway). As said before, a TB spacer won't do anything for you.
Taetsch, is the GM SC CARB approved? I can't recall...

I thought the GM SC was for manual transmissions only? I have been looking into a turbo setup but i havent found any complete kits. id like to go all out if i turbo, like the intercooler and all that stuff. as far as exhaust set up goes, can i get a complete system or do i have to keep the stock cat on it? id like to get a matching set up if possible (and pass smog). well guys thanx for the info so far. keep them comin plz. also (off topic) if anyone has great ideas for a cool sub setup for the trunk (and still have access to the spare) can i get some pics or somethin? just for brainstorming my next project... not to steal someones setup.. thanx

You won't find a turbo kit that's CARB approved, and I know someone has the GM SC on an auto, but I don't think you can use the ECM program, so you'd have to 'illegally' alter your fuel system...

As far as sub setups, I've always liked the dual 10s in the rear corners (right infront of the taillight access holes), but any stereo is just extra weight

True, you won't find one that's CARB approved, but Signal Auto has a turbo kit for the newer style civic hatch that passes smog. Although that really doesn't have anything to do with your Cav, it can pass a smog test.

I was at the GM Performance Parts website: http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/perfpartsjsp/partlist.jsp?cat=14253§ion=ep#12498287

and i have yet to find the SC for the automatic. can you tell me the wearabouts of the one made for automatics? And how long would it take to add a CARB compliant air intake? when i go home on leave i want to put it in myself, cause the shops out there will charge an $#!T load of money to put that simple part in. does it come with the hole drilled for the air flow sensor too or do i have to make one?
