can the e85 fuel be used in my 2.3l motor? If it isn't, how much damage will it due to my motor if i decide to use it?

E-85 fuel is 85% Ethanol, and 15% Diesel. Most GM full size trucks are "Flex Fuel", meaning you can put in gas or E-85 and the computer adjusts the timing as necessary. I believe Ford has a handful of vehicles that can take it as well. Its environmentally friendly (Ethanol is made from corn), but its more expensive than gas, and you get worse mileage.

I would recommend against using it in a car not designed to take it. It could lead to some nasty problems.

According to G.M. no it can't. Not without causeing drivability issues or possible fuel pump or fuel system related problems. You can go to any dealer and have them pull up the G.M. delerworld site they go to the service part of the site and look under bulletins

Well how about this? Could you lean your gas up with alchohol if so what kind and in what proportions? Would you get better gas mileage or worse? I have heard that you can and it actually keeps the inside of the motor very clean. I have no personal expierence with this so fill us in guys.

Most of the mid 80's on GM cars are able to use some alchohol. I think 10% is a safe number. The limit may be 20% but I don't want you to ruin your fuel system on my bad memory.

Keep in mind alcohol attacks aluminium and eats it up. Slowly but it does. Now just think about how much aluminum is in your fuel system. This is why its a problem.

I think you're talking about Methanol. Methanol is very agressive in reacting with metals and is very toxic to humans.

Ethanol is commonly used as a mix with fuels. Ethanol can be handled without immediate poisoning (unless you consider a few dead brain cells after 8 hrs of drinking "immediate poisoning) and can be used with aluminum and other metals without anywhere near the worries associated with Methanol.

Here are the warnings from a 93 Cavalier service manual.

"Ethanol or grain alcohol fuel may be used, providing there is no more than 10% ethanol alcohol by volume."

"Methanol or wood alcohol fuels may be used, providing there is no more than 5% of methanol by volume.
NOTICE: Do not use fuels that contain more than 5% methanol. Use of a fuel (gasohol) that contains more than 5% of methanol can corrode metal fuel system components and damage plastic and rubber parts..."

So now there's no question for anyone out there reading.

So a bottle of 151 per tank huh hmmmmmmmm lolol jk jk..... What would you guys use something like rubbing alchohol or something like that or do they sell an aditive at the auto parts store... Sorry newbie when it comes to this...

I've had to burn JD when ran out of fuel.

Was on the way home from the liquor store when it happened.

The alcohol used in rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. It's safe to burn also, in low quantities. If you buy "iso-heet" drygas, you'll have a bottle of isopropyl alky to burn. Rubbing alky comes in several mixes. Make sure you get some that's 90% alky or more. Don't use 70% and definitely not 50%, because rubbing alky is mixed with water.

Other brands of dry gas (fuel line antifreeze) contain methanol. Be sure to check the label before adding it to the tank.

But I have to ask what you're looking for. Detonation resistance? Better mileage? Greener environment? There may be better alternatives for your purpose. If you want to learn more before spending $$, be sure to read the gasoline FAQ. Google for it.

in ny all the gas has 10% in it.

Isn't ethanol an octane booster, in that it combats knock somehow? Damn I'm a chemist I should know this. I did read that the 2.2L s-10 models are E85-compatable; does that mean the 2.2/2200 cavaliers could also use the fuel? If so, why not set up a still in the basement and ... well as homer simpson said... "one for you, one for me"





Does it go faster?

LOL ok for a chemist its probably not that hard to set up.... For the average Joe however... not to mention i am not sure its legal... On the other hand it would probably give local fire departments more work... I mean dont get me wrong I like a good explosion as well as the next guy.... I just prefer it to not come from my neighbors basement lol.
