I know it more than likely been talked about, can a swap be done with our existing transmission? or does no one know much on this subject?

There's not enough information out yet according to a few previous posts.

it's possible, then again.putting a V8 into a cavalier is possible too but not without a lot of work.

I'm listening on this one.

As far as having the 2.2 ECOTEC transmission hook up to a 2.4 ECOTEC motor, it seems like it's possible if both motors had the same transmission (manual or automatic). It looks like they should be able to work if those options are correct.

As far as other transmissions from other j-bodies, no they won't work.

i stopped at the GM dealer an looked at a 4 door cobalt SS1. Yes 4 door. I wanted to look at the motor and rear axle to see about some swaping on to the cavalier right. The motor was covered in plastic so no go there, but the rear axle was what i saw, looks like a cavi axle with the disk breaks on it. I want somebody else to go check this out and tell me it dones not look like it could work. disk swap might have got a hella lot easier

^^ Umm... okay the rear axle would not make a bit of dirrerence in this matter, and you didnt see a front axle with disc brakes either, you saw the halfshafts, steering knuckle, and rotors.

the 2.4L trans is a getrag also, so if the motor mound was the same, I don't see why it won't bolt up.
Then you got the problem of wiring....

yes it will bolt to the 2.2 trans in our j-bodies

you can make it run using the 2.2 eco pcm , but you will not have controll of the vvt

and i doubt you can use a vtec controller cause they do not work the same as the vvt

Yeah, that's the only problem I see too, hitting VTec. I would image you get the cobalts pcm to work.

Only time will tell, til people start trying to make it work.

Just a note that the 2.4 Eco is also coming standard in the new HHR (FWD)

Ok, sry forgot to mention that its the 2 LT that in comes standard in.

That's like saying a 2.4L tc comes stardard in a Z24 model. But the standard engine for a cav/fire is a 2.2L. 96+

If someone could get the vvt to work, I would imagine this would be a pretty popular swap!
