Mobil 1 Oil Cap
Thursday, September 15, 2005 1:29 PM
I didn't know exactly which forum to put this in, but oh well here goes. I recently purchased a Mobil 1 oil cap since I started using Mobil 1. It was from an LS1 engine. I knew that it would screw on ok so I bought it. However, has anyone noticed the "nipple" part under the oil cap on Eco's? The vette cap doesn't have this and I have no idea what it does. It looks like some kinda pressure relief setup, but there seems to be nowhere for the buildup to exit the cap. If you look closely, there is some spring loaded thing just inside the "nipple." I have no idea why you would ever vent oil through the cap, as it would cause a fire or make one heck of a mess. If anyone knows about this please share the wealth. I did have an idea to use the LSJ (Cobalt SS) cap to see if maybe that one had the "vent" or whatever.

BTW....if anyone knows the part number for the SS oil cap, please fire it my way.
Thanks.

What is the part number for the cap? Also, did it have the goofy looking valve thing on the bottom of the cap too? Maybe a dealer around here will let me trade caps.

Does anyone want a LS1 cap?? It fits the same way just minus the vent hole. I did find the PN, but no dealers will swap it, so I have no use for it Any suggestions how to get rid of it??

I really don't think that the top part of the cap will come off in one piece. They look to be pressed on or something, maybe glued. Like I said before, they are the same thread, and top, but the valve thingy isn't on the LS1 cap. I wouldn't mind swapping the tops if possible, but then I may ruin my only good cap.

ive seen people take the moble 1 top off and use it on the 2.4 , which is a screw type cap , not a twist cap like the eco

also ive had to replace alot of caps because the top came off , when i worked for chevy

so it is possible , just use a practice cap first

Do you just pry the top off then? It didn't look like it would budge to me, but I'll give it a shot if you say it will.

Smaller flat-head screw drivers.

That's how I have a Mobil 1 cap on my 2.4l......it snaps off.

Yeah i finally separated the new cap, but I don't think there is any way to get the valve off my current cap without destroying it. I had to pound/tear/pry...you get the drift. Now that i destroyed a perfectly good $8 cap, I'm not sure I want to risk destroying the correct one for my car. Go figure.
