Check the boost forum under the "Boostin an auto 2.2" thread...it's under debate, but the general understanding is 'no'.

95-97 blocks do not bolt to 2200 heads and vice versa.

bolt patterns are off i believe. intake manifold and fuel system are different. valvetrain is different. different length pushrods, shall i continue?

Well, my response was purely to "will it bolt up?", not "Is it compatible?" Two completely different questions.
I have yet to hear that the headstud pattern is different...anyone have 2200 measurements?

well the reason why JoeJoe is asking that is because I head his head that he shipped to me and I am having a problem with finding the right head for my 96 sunfire and its a 2.2 and I dont know if the casting number haves to be the right one or not but here is the casting number I got from my old head 10112391-S

I agree. I know of several people who have bolted the 2200 head to the 2.2 block.

Ok I am no rocket scientist but ummm bolt pattern and compatability kinda need to go hand in hand. I mean lets say the bolt pattern is the same but the chambers are offset by just a few mm. or more wouldnt the piston then be hitting the bottom of the head? or how about the lifters rockers and pushrod compatability. I could be totally wrong and they are completely interchangeable but if it were me I would be calling GM and asking them before i went swappin heads on motors from different years.

from what i understand the coolant passages differ...

the alignment patter on the exhaust manfolds differ

the same for the exhaust manifolds...

also i believe the coolant passages dont exactly line up...

check here. look at photo 10 especially.

safe bet, get the engine from your range of cars... its a 96, so everything from 95-97 in a 2.2 ohv...

I have two 94-97 heads (not sure on exact year of either), and while one has one tapped port on the passenger side, the other has six. Little things like this that may have differed between years will also prevent swapping, so you're not exactly 'safe' with anything exept probably your own production month

Like I said before, the guy asked if it would 'bolt up' to the block. The only thing involved here are the headstud locations...which from what we've now heard, are compatible.
Obviously you would also need to re-route coolant lines, re-route the fuel lines, shave the gasket a little for the coolant passages, determine a new pushrod length (or are they possibly the same? My 96s measure 7 5/8" x 3/8", but Byron C said his were 5/16 x 7.900...not sure if those were stock), port the header primaries a tad, and figure out how to change the impedence the computer sees in the resistors.
