I've been debating this, and I need some opinions. My project is to build a 220-240whp daily driver that can be used for weekend autocross, drags, time attacks. At this point I could either build the 2200 for boost and go that route,which I know can net me the power I want, or I can buy all of the stuff for an Eco swap and my friends and I have the ability to do the swap, then build and boost. The Eco seems to me like it would be more reliable with boost, which is why I haven't just decided to build and boost the OHV. Opinions?
i vote for the swap
My vote would be swap, but im biased because im in that process right now :p I still love my 2.2 though.

in all honesty, it depends. ohv are nice little engines, but they are so hard to gets parts for them. to get a serious amount of power. a swap would be nice because you have a better platform to work off of. But it depends on what kind of car you are starting off with. 00-02 are easier to swap a eco in then say a 95-99. it is all how deep your pockets are.
I have an 01, and I'm just looking for 220-240whp as reliably as possible. This isn't going to be immediate, as I'm currently planning this project to take a couple of years. The current plan is, regardless of engine choice....buy a slightly used engine, rebuild outside of car, install turbo, drop in everything, then tune. That way I will have minimal downtime.

Not really. Just about everything they have for a Ecotec, they have for the 2.2 ohv.

only prob is the majority never bother to look for em.
i;d say its your call. decide how much money you wanna spend. its not hard on any engine, but its easier to deal with the engine you already have.

This is very true, except for a good aftermarket forged crank. That would be nice to have.
I say build the OHV, they are cheaper and easier to find when looking for a spare engine, and the parts do exist to make some serious power, you just have to look, and they cost isnt anything more than youd pay for the same part for an eco. The eco is a good engine, dont get me wrong, ive come close to trading in my 99 for an 03+ several times, but i jiut couldnt bring myself to it, i love pushrods.

Haha, looks like all of the guys that own or have worked on OHV say keep the engine and the Eco/LD9 guys say go for the swap. We'll see what happens, I guess I'll just look around for spare engines and whichever I find and feel is the best deal I will take and build.

exactly....
most of the people saying swap havent had much if any experience with the engine, hence the comments you will read through out the forums, about
2.2ohv
not having parts
no upgrades
etc etc blah blah...
pretty much the reality of it is, any engine has similar potential of what most here will ever accomplish.
if someone can build a 13 second N/A 2.2 ohv and the avg twin cam is running 14's or 15;s...
just shows, you can do whatever. hell adler himself is turbo and on the verge of 12;s.
overall you can spend less money on a 2.2 and get the same results for the most part. not to mention an abundance of spares
Also remember that if you decide on a swap, you will need the motor, transmission, PCM, wiring harness, coolant lines, fuel lines, and maybe the mounts.....

Reliability hasn't been a problem with the 2.2L/2200s, even boosted. Just ask Adler^^^^!
Any motor not built for boost, if given too much boost will have problems.
My motor hasnt had any problems since being turboed. *crossing fingers* The motor has around 17,000 miles on it, and about 15,000 of those miles have been with the turbo I think.
Its all in the tuning!!!! I guess that I have a pretty good tuner...Mike Karas.

arent the blocks stronger too?
i say build the ohv cause the money u spend on doing a swap can go in the engine, but if u do the swap u have the swap parts to buy and the turbo stuff to buy, which
(might) b a little more expensive for the eco.

^^^Hard to say, OHV has a cast iron block thats proven durable. Eco has an aluminum block with the cross bolted mains, which has proven very durable in the LS series motors.
I would of built up my OHV but umm I got a hell of a deal on the LD9 motor. So ill be spending the same amount on my build with the 2.4 if I would of stayed with the OHV..
So its all about matter of personal choice I guess.
