i work at a volvo dealer, the used car manager walks up to me and asks me (cuz i know a lot about cavaliers, but im still not a mechanic) about his son's car. he said he has a 98, 2.2 cavalier. has over 100k miles, but still runs like a champ.
anyway, problem is, off the line, (not racing) he said it sometimes semes like its in neutral, then kicks into gear, like its not engaging into drive off a stop. is this a common problem? do you guys have any ideas about what it coudl be? i was thinking maybe something wrong in the shift controls, but again, im only a trainee mechanic, i have a LOT to learn. any help is GREATLY appreciated, cuz it makes me look smarter!

mine does that sometimes to, id like to know what the problem is.
i got word from one of my friends, for your reference tony wise. if its a 3spd, it could be a vaccum problem in the tranny, or the tranny itself could be shot. if its a 4spd, the fluid level should be checked, if that is ok, then the tranny is probably on the way out.

maybe the serpentine belt is slipping making that hesitation sensation happen..just an option for you to look at..

that or both should be checked for the fluid levels....
if its a fluid problem, try some transmedic from any autoparts store.... then go from there
Any check engine light or codes? If so you are probably looking at a shift solenoid gone bad. Is it a 3 speed or 4 speed auto?
welcome to my universe. the wonderful world of 3spd auto tranny slippage. like event said, check fluid levels. Transmedic or B&M TrickShift are prone to helping out a bit.
I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.
Any auto tranny can slip. They have wet clutches and/or bands that engage the gears. If the clutches/bands are worn or the fluid is low the tranny will slip.
BTW: the 3T40/TH125C shifts by line pressure which is controlled by the governor, pressure regulator valve and the throttle valve via the TV cable. The 4T40E is controled by the PCM via shift solinoids.
It does that to me every now and then, but it only does it when I first put the car in gear for the day to go somewhere. And it's barely noticeable, and doesnt do it after that. I'd say it's not really a problem.
^^^ It does sound like it's time to do a fluid and filter change, before it burns up your clutches/band.
