the ultimate swap(if possible)
Monday, August 08, 2005 10:36 PM
so everybody wants to put the 3.4 or the 3.8 swap in there sunfire or cavy, well what if we went a lil extreme and dropped the 4.0 DOHC 32 valve V8 oldsmobile aurora engine in? wouldnt that be insane, i heard that thing is wnat they use in the gm indy cars. so if i were to do this i want a manual tranny of course, what about the 2000 sunfire getrag tranny would that bolt up?, and i know that i would definatly have to customize mounts, when i get the motor im going to measure it up and see if it will even fit in the engine compartment, i think it might, if the 3.8 would cause 3.8 is huge also, but the 4.0 is only .2 bigger so i dont see y not... im getting the motor for 50 bux so if it dont fit ill have fun ripping it apart and learning how it was put together, but i wanna do something insane and put it in , tell me what u guys think, and if u think it is possible...

I think the V6's are a tight enough drop in a 3rd gen...a V8 seems almost impossible or just alot of fabrication. Also, I believe you would need to convert it to RWD drivetrain. Unless an Aurora was a FWD car.

Honestly, I think a supercharged V6 will suit well and be less headache than a all motor v8.

Just my thoughts though...

sorry to say it but i dont think its possable, and if it was i would put a 350 small block in my cavi but it just wont fit, and keep in mind even if gm used that engine for an indy car its hardly the same engine. Besides GM pulled 960 some odd horse out of the ecotec and those fit just fine

i say if you got the time, money, and effort go for it. definitely will be time consuming and alot of work. and like also said it would be just about as much work but far more worth it to just go with a 5.7L small block. the physical engine size wouldnt be to far off

the olds aurora (sp) v8 is a very small-size, small displacement v8. low to mid 4-liter range i believe. i'd still rather go with the 3800 series II because boost is more fun anyways.

Anything's possible.
Was just at a car show this past weekend...
Saw a 95 Cavalier with a 454 big block in it converted to rear wheel drive.
Actually looked more like they set the Cavalier body on a different frame, but was unique anyway.
I didn't have a camera with but some friends did.
i will see if they got any pics.

Just because the displacement is .2L bigger, doesn't mean the physical engine size is anywhere near a 3x00 V6. A V8 always has 1 extra cylinder per bank, which makes the biggest difference. IIRC, GM's 2.8L V6 and 3.8L V6 are the same external size...

Actually NJHK, the Aurora was FWD. And it is a rather small V8. I have seen one in the 'yard near my house and I honestly dont think its much bigger than the 3.4 DOHC and that has been done. The problem lies with the transmission, as it is Northstar derived, it uses the Northstars' massive 4T80E....which will not fit I am sure. of course you will need a new subframe and all new wiring but I think it might actually 'fit' in the J's engine bay. I say DO IT cause I wanna see it!!

Thank you for the info. I didn't think he would recommend a motor if it was from a RWD vehicle so that's why I left it up in the air if it was FWD. Really, I'm not familiar with the Aurora so thank you.

i messured a caddie north star motor and that should just fit but you would need to knotch the k fram up front to fit the exhaust manifolds and you would need custom transaxles and you know the regular jazz............wouldnt that be awsome!!!!

If CWS Tuning managed to squeeze a northstar and its trans into a Mk2 Golf, i'm pretty sure you could fit it in a J if you have the fabrication/wiring know-how...

Behold the Coupe DeGolf!!

v8 isnt any longer than a 4cyl its just wider. being that its dohc it will take up alot of room. if it fits it will be almost impossible to work on without removing the engine so build a sub frame that is easily removable. radiator and firewall clearance is going to be the issue. trans is another story, since they only came auto, its computer is programmed for auto. so even if you found a 5spd that bolts up, the comp will be an issue.

so ur telling me that the 4.0 dohc has the 4t60e tranny, well if i remember correctly working at jiffy lube and changing oil each gm tranny says what i t is on the tranny pan and many 3800s had a 4t60e, and i know for a fact that the getrag from the 2000 sunfire bolts on the 3800, so i think i got something here, now the next thing is that computer, i thought that the computer controlled all the firing and stuff and then tranny shifts automatically in its own, maybe since its newer its computer controlled but maybe i can find a way to play with it so i can hook a 5 spd to it, everything can have a 5 spd on it i would hope.... help me out guys

^^ yeah except the 4t40e from the sunfire and cav isn't rated for that kind of power and probably won't last long stock.... I'm sure it can be built, but i don't know for sure if it would take the abuse for long.

NO...dont confuse that The Aurora has the 4T80E. It is different and Beeffier...though it is possible that it might be the same bolt pattern....I dunno.
