Snapping Pushrods
Sunday, August 07, 2005 7:51 PM
Ok.....I just got the car outta the shoppe a week ago
Coming home tonight I snapped a push rod
I have the Comp Cams 1.6 roller rockers and have them on the GM studs like the instructions.
Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions??

I'm using the nuts that came with the roller rockers.
But not sure if they spun loose since the cam and pistons make the engine
pretty loud.

HELP!!!

if you're not sure if the bolt came loose or not i'm assuming you didn't open up the valve cover yet... in which case i'd have to ask how you came to the conclusion that you snapped a pushrod?

if you literally snapped a pushrod, then someone really does not know how to adjust the valves or tighten down rocker studs. it's not difficult but i can only imagine your valve lash...

Well....yes I took it apart last night and dropped in another push rod....runs good.
There isn't a whole lot you can check to see if the bolt is loose since the tension of the push rod, and valve spring were gone.

I did the adjustments and my mechanic checked them out today.
we looked a the push rod pieces and could only come up with 2 possibilities
1. the roller bolt worked it's self loose and just snapped.
2. the crower push rods are hardened and maybe they don't flex enough for the engine.
which would explain the clean break....unlike my last head where they exploded into pieces.

Is anyone else using hardened push rods or with the roller rockers, just using the stock push rods???

I hope this isn't the problem...I ordered mine on Friday
Should your pushrods really be flexing anyway?

I snapped one of my manley pushrods. I just think it doesn't flex enough. But also I got mine a little longer to get correct geometry. 7.650. I got a clean break on mine in the on the the 1/3 of the rod.

D@mn Sal7.....our profiles look almost identical!!!

Mine broke in the exact place....right at the guide plate...are you using the nuts that came with the comp cams roller rockers?

I've got my mechanic looking for some locking nuts....I'll post what we get if we find some....have you only snapped one?
Do you have a lot of valve train noise also?

If anyone else is using comp cams 1.6....let us know your set up.

Hopefully if some of the other 2.2 people can help us end this issue....haha
Isn't it a fun sound when they snap?? Had to limp mine home, running red lights for about 5 miles!! luckily I've snapped them before so I knew if it doesn't die right then she's got a good chance of making it home without breaking anything.

I had the Comp Cams rockers on my old engine...noisy as heck, but never broke anything...stock everything else (internally at least)

they should not be noisy. if you adjust your valves properly the motor should purr. mine does.

I had adjusted them as they sould have been...although I may have left them a tiny bit loose, being worried about what these guys are dealing with now
