how do i turn of my traction control?
Sunday, August 07, 2005 4:49 AM
i got a 2002 cav. auto

i just want to know how to turn it off, a friend said i could just pull the fuse and call it
good another said that if i pull the E-brake up to the first click it wont engage the brake
but will turn of the traction control

just want to know cuz the anti-lock brakes cut in way to early

one night i was driving abut 70-80 mph and had to slam on my brakes and all i got was
the anti-lock trying to grip, now ive got slotted disks, ceramic pads, upgraded calipers
and sticky tires so i know i can stop faster and dont have to worry about a slide

and also

one night i was driving on a part of the highway i drive all the time and hit a pot hole
well a sec. or two after i hit the pot hole the car locked up the front right wheel and pulled
me in to the next lane, just yanked the steering wheel out of my hands, thank god
it was 2:00am and no one was there, i went back to take a look at the hole and it was
nothing at all

so now you see my problem

70-80 MPH. I don't know the speed limits where your driving but lets think about this for a sec. Mabey It's not your brakes that you should be worrying about. I have a 2.2 auto with ABS and haven't had any problems. As far as the brakes applying themselves after you hit a pot hole. Never heard of it. The only problems I've had with T/C have been in the snow where I've found it more of a pain in the A## than anything but thats at low speeds and puting it in second solves that one.

If You can't have fun at what you're doing, what's the point!!!

Eh... wrong system buddy.. the anti-lock brakes are coming on too soon.

Traction control is when you have wheel spin... ie. burn outs, and it bogs.

70-80mph... Of course its going to get iffy when you slam on your brakes. I don't even have ABS in my Cavalier and I can stop awesome, lol

Well, you can probably unplug your abs module and deal with an abs warning light. I've never experimented with disabling abs because mine is usually good about not chiming in untill things get pretty bad.

When was the last time you bled your brakes?

ok heres a better question has anyone tried both? non-abs and abs
like on the track or just messing around or it just got unplugged?
and if so what can i expect to see in the way of stopping, turning....and all

and as for last time i bled my brakes, i want to say about 9-10 month ago
but from then to now this is the only time i had to really use them

ABS = braking... which I don't do til the end of the quarter mile.. so that's irrelevant.

traction control = stops wheelspin... bad for launches.. so I turn mine off by putting the shifter in 2nd and moving it up to D as soon as I get traction.

gm spent millions perfecting abs its tried and true there is no way u will stop faster without it. i don't think your problem is abs related disconnecting anything is not the answer i think something else is wrong.

ya the spent all that money on finding out how to stop a 100% stock car, now my car
isnt 100% stock, ive upgraded my brakes and my tires
so the comp in our cars was programed to stop a car with stock tires and stock everything

so if your just driving at 45 or what ever and you got to stop the comp thinks ok well
were going about 45 and at the rate of deceleration the amount of the contact pad plus
the weight of the car and the grip of the tires with the stopping power of the disk brakes
will lock up at X

now a X is now Y in my car the comp has no way to know that unless i reprogram it

X=stock stopping power
Y=new stopping power

so to wrap everything up

ABS=brakes locking up and going to anti-lock brakes
TC=stops the wheels from spinning from a stop or at lost of traction

so back to my first question and all that is needed is an answer and not a freakin lecher
how can i turn off my ABS easily? just pull a fuse or click the E-brake once? or what?

your comp. does know how fast u are going. but it does NOT take into account how much u weigh u could have five 450lb guys in the car with a trunk full of bricks towing a sea-do your comp does NOT take into account the contact pad of your brakes again u could have the best brake pads money can buy or the cheapest or totally wore out. and your comp. does NOT take into account the grip of the tires again you could have the best money can buy or crap or even your spare on plus has no way of knowing the road condition gravel,sand.rain.snow ice or a sticky race track and your comp. does NOT know when your tires are going to lock up . at each wheel there is a speed sensed were your abs is monitoring the speed of each wheel and when u stand on the brakes the the comp. monitors the speed of each wheel and when it sees one or more wheels are going slower it knows the car is locking up than it applys the abs so to '' wrap'' things up your brake mods, tires, car for that matter are irrelevant to the comp.and even your Xs and YS so before you start giving attitude know what your talking about.

here....traction control: buy a sunfire and press the ets switch
you wabnt to disbale teh ABS: if any part of the abs isnt working it shuts it all off...soooo
reach up into ur wheel well and find an abs sensor. rip it out of its housing and done

frankly there is no need to disable either in real life driving but its ur funeral...

ABS doesn't necessarily make you stop faster... it was designed to give you control when you are braking, as opposed to locking up your tires and not being able to steer.

Read Sport Compact, Motor Trend, European Tuner or whatever and see when they do performance tests with non ABS cars. All they say is it's horrible because there's no ABS to stop you quicker. It's been proven that ABS stops your car faster on a pedal to the floor stop.
You really need to learn about cars before you stop disabling anything. Your brakes do not stop your car. Yes you read that right. Your brakes do NOT stop your car. Your tires and tires alone stop your car. All your brakes do is slow your wheels from spinning. Upgrading your brakes only reduces the overheating which causes brake fade. If you don't believe me, read up on it. Plus I'll give you something to think about. Take an Indy car and put your 195/75/15s on it. Take it up to 100mph and slam on the brakes. The braking distance will be extremely longer than before. Now take those same Indy tires and put them on your Cav. Do the same test. Your car will stop quicker. The friction of the tire determines the speed at which you decelerate.
Just like LEVI said, your computer doesn't give 2 @!#$s less than a damn what your contact patch is. It monitors wheel speeds independently and determines which wheel is spinning faster than the other and then it activates the ABS.
"one night i was driving abut 70-80 mph and had to slam on my brakes and all i got was

You don't have to worry about a slide? Dude, any car can lock up their brakes. Look at real race cars. They look up their brakes all the time and they spent a lot more than the $300 you did.
Just please do us all a favor and leave your abs alone before you kill yourself or someone else. Thanks.

Is that a...a...a... a Cavalier?
