Engine swap, need help
Thursday, July 28, 2005 4:02 PM
Ok so I bleww the motor in my car. It's a 97 Z-24 with a 2.4
I got a motor from a wrecked 99 Z.

So is this going to be a direct swap? Is there anything I need to know about doing this swap? My brother is a mechanic ans will be doing the work but he said to check if there is any Cavalier specific stuff I need to know for the swap?

I'm starting the swap tommorow evening so any advice will be greatly apprciated.

Finally I'll have my car back and I can burn this damn neon I'm driving!!!! WooHoo!!

I was just reading my reciept and the guy listed it as a 98 2.3 Quad 4 motor.

This doesn't sound right to me?? The number on the timing chain cover says

D221721
barcode
T10D221721

TD7
24574810
barcode
10TD7

And the car was a 98, I put 99 in the first post by mistake.

the 2.3 died in 94. 95 was a 2.3 but half 2.4 and half 2.3.

swap will be direct completely. as long as it's a pre-00 LD9 then there are no transmission or wiring differences or anything. did you get the PCM too or just the motor? I find it in the best interest to always swap out PCM's when working with swaps from different years.

If you use a 97 pcm with a 99 engine, you will get a code for the EGR, since GM stopped using it in 99. I'm not sure what else you would have a problem with though. Your first post said 99, your second said 98. So which one is it?

It's also a very good idea to do some extra work before putting that engine in the car. When I did this last year, I got a new timing chain, tensioner & guides, and a new water pump along with polyurethane motor mounts. I wish I would have gone one extra step and done the secret cams as well, but time and money were against me. Those are a pain in the ass to do while the engine is in the car, and if you do it while it's out, you won't have to worry about much more than basic maintenance for a while. I know you are in a rush to get it back in, but it's definately worth the extra time to source stuff out.

There's basically not much else to know. I reccomend moving stuff to the side rather than just taking it out alltogether. ie the heater core, and all the lines by the break booster (when we did mine, we tied it all off to the side) , and the starter, fuel rail, etc.

I didn't even see this last night. You won't have to swap anything over then. It will all be plug and play so to speak. Remove accessories from engine, move stuff out of the way, pull engine, perform any kind of maintenance you can, swap clutch, then do it all backwards.

Well, this is just to get my car rollin again. I am rebuilding my blown engine into a race engine(boosted hopefully), so this is gonna be a quick swap to tide me over for the rest of the summer till she goes under the knife this winter for an overhaul.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys have been very helpful.

you might as well pick up an extra block and head so you can have your motor built by the time winter rolls around... swap over accessories and drop new motor in.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing with my engine that I am removing tommorow.
I found a place locally that does engines, so I might send it to them to have it done right. I honestly don't know if I trust myself to do it. I think the extra cash would be worth it for peace of mind and some warranty.
