do it your self internals

Has anyone ever put forged pistons and rods in their cavy before without removing the engine from the engine bay? I was going to attempt it by taking off the cylinder head and the oil pan and pushing the pistons out the top of the engine and putting the new ones in the same way. Any suggestions?

I've had to do "rering" jobs at work, VW's that burn oil and under warranty we do it that way and just replace the rings... if your going with forged pistons chances are they are meant for an overbore, meaning the cylinders machined slightly bigger to clean them up... I don't even know if you can get stock sized forged pistons. if your gonna tear that much of it down just pull it out and do it right the first time

I dont think you can, and i sure as hell know it wont be much easier, might as well remove the engine.

yeah its actualyl probably not that hard to pull the engine with the right tools, prolly save you time too.

um it shows you exactly how to do it in the Chilton's manual. and you can get stock bore and requires new sleeves to be installed, but the .20 over bore is recommended.

Yeah, most machine shops will do the assembly of your engine very cheap too if you get them todo all the machine work.

The GM ecotec handbook says you can do it with the engine still in the car, I have always removed the engine to do lower engine work.

But GM says you can do it with a lift.

I would only recomend pulling the engine. Bore it over .020 and do it right. Why spend that much on pistons and save $50 to bore it, the pistons dont cost any more and you have a much better setup. More precision most likely then stock.

well it depends... if its a low mileage engine with no really whooping put on it, then it makes no sense to have perfectly good engine bored out. Stock size pistons are available for some of the J-body engines... since his registry isn't filled out and he doesn't mention what engine he's doing i can't look it up to see if they're available for his engine, but if its low mileage (less than 20-30K) you'd be pretty safe just honing it out and putting in the new stuff. But like i said, only if that mileage is GENTLE, WELL MAINTAINED MILEAGE... of course, at my shop we have re-ringed cars with over 70K without removing the engine... never had any of them come back with problems, and one was a 210hp Daytona IROC that i know the kid beats the @!#$ out of.... so decide yourself. SO can you do it? Yes...

Should you? Personally if i was building a motor for pretty serious hp, I'd take the time to remove the engine and let a machine shop thoroughly check the bores for out-of-round and check the crank journals as well. Remember this is the motor that you're depending on to get you down the track (hopefully we're not building an engine that needs internals simply for street use) reliably, and there's really no reason to take chances.
