Wheel Hop

I am wondering if wheel hop is an issue for the jbody.

If so, what is the cure? How much are motor mounts?

thanks,

Vita

Wheel hop can be an issue, I know that I get some everyonce and a while. I believe the best way to go about reducing wheel hop would be to buy a set of tubular control arms and a set of polyeurethane control arm bushings. The motor mounts will help keep the motor in place and put the power to the ground more easily. I bought my mounts from Karo at carcustoms he has both motor mounts for $65 and a set of control arm bushings for $35. You use to be able to buy control arms from Rksport but I'm not sure if you can anymore, they had a problem with the first design. Someone else should be able to tell you.

do you feel vibrations through the chassis as with most any other motor mount?

you'll feel the vibes worse with an auto than you will with a manual. some say solid mounts make wheelhop worse... but they really don't. i see them helping traction actually. another key factor is your suspension setup. if you want good launches, it can't be done well on stock suspension.

Very well said. The best cure for wheel hop is adjust your driving. The right foot can control it all. As with any car a well put suspension can help as well. I do not get wheels hop. I also have tires that have plenty of traction when at the track.

yea i forgot to add that. traction makes wheelhop go away. a good launch = no wheelhop, but no bogging. a perfect launch is exactly that. perfect. your car will squat, and scoot.

i notice some vibes from the mounts but they aren't too bad, i highly recommend getting a pair from Karo, he's a good guy.
just like they said above if you have traction wheel hop won't be an issue, you should play around with launching and get the feel yourself to how your car reacts with the RPMs and gas. and adjust accordingly, but the bushings couldn't hurt either.

I used to have bad wheel hop on stock suspension, the rear would sag a mile, causing the weight to transfer to the back tires, which raised the front end lowering traction to the drive tires.

After putting anti-sag springs on the rear only, I tested a launch: and to my suprise it hooked up 50% better.

With the correct setup, I don't think wheel-hop or traction should be a problem, until you get close to 300 HP, then you will need to learn the breaking point of your tires(what RPM to launch at).

Hope this helps out somewhat.

I'm so glad to hear someone else say that. I said that in a post once and had to buy a flame suit.

Anyway--back to the topic. I am not sure about the tubular control arms that scrawnyguy18 talked about. I have heard that they are not good for everyday driving, they are for track use (i'm sure if I am wrong, someone will correct me). The urethane control arm bushings along with urethane sway bar bushings (if you have a sway bar), helped my old car out alot. I'd try those coz they are the cheapest.

thing is, things that are made for track use, usually should be stronger to be able to take alot more abuse....

go with the bushings....trust me on this.

also on suspension, squatting althougha cool feeling....try to minimize it.... any kind of body roll, or squat or dive.... better handling and such.

also i agree with john and those above who said to adjust your driving a bit as well.... thats the most free mod you can do
