First off what car?

And why dual cats?

03 cavy the duaal kit looks nice and the razzi kit has dual outlets

Do you mean dual outlet, (two mufflers?), you really don't need two cats on your car....

if you mean the catback, add a resonator....

sounds like your exhaust shop was wowed about dual exhaust... i would be weary of their work, if they are willing.

He defenitley meant dual cat-back exhaust, not dual cats.

James Owens, to answer your question...it sounds loud and raspy for 2 reasons:

1. No resonator(s)
2. Canister style mufflers

If I were you I would either check out Magnaflow's setup or Borla's setup if you want an all-around good exhaust system (as far as sound wise).

If you decide to go with that shop, check their previous work and make sure they don't do crush bends...from the sounds of it, that's what it sounds like they wanted to do. If you want duals, there is alot of bending and you want to make sure that it's a full bend..I would look for a shop that does mendral bending to ensure that.

Good Luck with your decision.

FYI: I have no resonators and a 2 1/2" setup w/oval style mufflers.

Flowmasters sound good with resonators too. I get compliments all the time. But I have never seen a dual Flowmaster setup on a cav or fire.

to get stainless and mandrel bends, it would probably cost the same, people alot of the times dont get stainless pipe or mandrel bends when they have a custom exhaust done. It also depends what you want.

I dont care for the round mufflers on that setup, so i went custom, but It cost me more to part it all together and have it all done than to buy the setup, duno how much install would have been, but I also had a header done at the same time.. got what i wanted though.

just the cat back sounds really good but throw it on a header and high flow cat it sounds really raspy.

njs CANISTER mufflers have NOTHING to do with it being raspy, I had a canister muffler without a resonator twice and it sounded beautiful

First you can have a custom cat-back exhaust done for much less than RK kit. Also for mandrel bent you are going to pay money for it. Mandrel bent is not a must.
It is not so much the round mufflers that get the rasp. It is the straight through ones. Like mine. My car is very loud, and when under WOT gets a little raspy. Oh well it performs. With my header, muffler, and changing my exhaust 3 times I have a total of $430 in my exhuast. My header was $130, my muffler was $100. I first went from having just a muffler, to a 2.25 cat-back, then went full 2.25 with the stock cat opening cut to equal that. Then went to 2.50 full exhaust, and the Cat cut to fit, then had the cat removed, and then a resenator put in. They only charged me about $200.00 for all of the exhaust work.

Ok Phil, let me rephrase:

The "raspy" sound is mostly due to lack of resonators BUT what muffler you have is part of what kind of sound you have. Canister style mufflers tend to give more of a high pitch tone than oval style mufflers. Of course, if you get some generic canister muffler from a no name company, it will probably sound like garbage but if you get one from a reputable company like Tenzo like Phil did, I'm sure it would sound nicer.

My personal belief is that the raspiness comes from the shape and size of the exhaust, not resonators and mufflers. Well, no, actually some mufflers can cause the raspy sound.
This comes from my last 4 cars.... '79 RX-7, 94 Del Sol, 96 DSM, & 01 Sunfire. All had no resonators and no mufflers. Simply a moderately sized (as in NOT huge) exhaust pipe, and stock cat. Hell yeah, they were loud (except the DSM, turbos are pretty quiet), but none had that raspy, Honda-with-a-fart-can sound. Even my Honda. Too large a pipe size is the main culprit, and some of these canister mufflers are secondary. The sound just reverberates inside of your exhaust like a freaking megaphone.
Larger exhausts make more sound. Free-flow cats make more sound. "Performance" mufflers make more sound. Bends, twists, and loopty-loops make more sound, in the form of echos and reverb. All of this will affect not only the sound volume, but the sound quality. In the same way imperfections will make a musical instrument sound funny.

Does the RKSport Dual set ona 2.4 with headers sound raspy, if using stock Cat?

Doesn't really matter on the motor...but yes it does sound raspy because MAINLY there aren't any resonators on it and also the muflers they supply are canister style (which don't help the sound). Keeping the stock cat on will be fine and the headers will only make your exhaust sound deeper and louder cause your allowing more of an exhaust flow.

Would it be better to have a set custom made then (Mandrel Bent) vs say a Borla or Magna flow set then, ie the oval stock looking muffler vs canisters. IMO, id rather have duals with a muffler that looks like the Single CBE that RKSport makes, where all you'd see is a tip, just like the stock.

In my opinion, it's no good to buy an exhaust setup that your going to end up modifying to your liking. yes, find a shop that does mendrel bending, find a muffler you like, purchase some resonators and that will be about the same price and you'll have exactly what you want. If you want to get a header or cat, that's a perfect time to do so.

Well, here is my 2 cents!! I chopped off my stock mufflers and welded on two magnaflow canisters. Stock exaust all the way to the cans. It sounded good to me, not too raspy. Then I put on my header and high flow cat and 2.5 inch piping all they way. My god was it loud and obnoxious!! I hated it. I added a magnaflow resonator and it was better but still a little too loud for me. Finally i cut off the duel cans and put a larger magnaflow oval can with a lazy s in it. I am very happy with the way it sounds now. Still loud but not raspy. I might get a bigger resonator and a bigger muffler later but im not sure yet. I hope this all helps.

After seeing the last video when you floored from the stop sign, I must say that the sound is not too shabby ! But uh, is it normal that your Sunfire has more high-pitched sound to it than mine ? I suppose is because of the difference between our engines (DOHC vs OHV) but I'm not sure...

Actually no. I have motor work done...pretty much since I got my P & P head, it screams and gets high pitched at high rpms. Also, my cams were upraded (JBP Stage 1s).
