Just curious as to see if anyone has installed an Auto Meter or Stewart Warner guage in place of their stock cluster on a 2K+ 2.4L. I haven't researched it too in depth, but I did search on here. If anyone has any input, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hmmm..........nobody has any input on this issue?

I want to do it to mine, or maybe go digital. I know it is easier on the 00-02's because the theft unit is not in the cluster anymore like the 95-99's. I have seen it done a couple of times, but I cannot find their email address. One guy has a Sunfire and I think he lives in Texas

Well, I appreciate your input. Hopefully there are others that can help both of us in this quest.

Ronnie C and Doublezed come to mind. They have custom clusters but, they do have the gauges. And DZ doesnt have a 2.4 anymore.
OK, I'll touch on this a bit. I don't think it's possible. From what I've HEARD GM uses a different way of sending information to the gauges than aftermarket companies. They tie in to the stock computer. I'm not saying I know that they won't work, but I know a guy who is an electrical engineer, who said it wouldn't.
Now if you were to change your engine management system (ie: get rid of the stock ecm and get standalone) this is very doable. In fact, I'm sure it's necessary. But that's probably the worst reason to spend 3 grand and god knows how much time.
I say try and do some research on this somewhere other than the org. Maybe try other GM boards? Maybe find a tech who can explain it?

Agree on Ronnie C .... Might ask him about it ...

What are you wanting to know ?
First off the Autometer gas gauge operates off of the old 0 to 90 OHM sending units . The 1998 and newer sending units operate at 40 to 240 OHM . That means when you are completely out of gas with one of these units and have it hooked to an Autometer gauge it will read around half a tank of gas . I used a sending unit from a 1996 J-body .
The idiot lights and such are controlled by the IPC which is located on the back of the circuit board for the cluster . Most of the idiot lights are operated by a serial connection with the PCM or the BCM . The exceptions are the turn signals which have their own wires running to the cluster . So to keep the idiot lights you will need to figure out how to keep the factory gauge cluster hooked up and run wires to that gauge cluster to the new one you are making . From there you could either go to the trouble like me and use the actualy symbols from the factory gauge face or just use some LED's with housing from Radio Shack .
Most of the newer Autometer speedo's have a PCM output on the back of the gauge's . You would wire the speed sensor into the Autometer gauge . From there you would then use the PCM hookup on the back of the Speedo to run into the PCM so it gets the signal it needs .
My car is not a 2.4 but it is a 2000 and goes along the same criteria in this area .

Now what about your dummy lights and everything else your stock pcm uses? I've seen something similar to what you have Mr Goodwrench, but just the gauges that that person needs. No dummy lights, since standalone is being used, and something for signals and brights.

for signals and brights, you can just wire in leds and stick em in the dash. Dummy lights, you could pretty much get away without them (considering you had gauges for oil pressure, water temp, etc.) I don't THINK the stock pcm requires your gauge cluster to be there... as long as you got the VSS hooked up then it should be good... or at most it could take some clever wiring (and possible relocation of the stock cluster to keep your CEL and your odometer.) Other than that... it cant be too hard.
Some oft he idiot lights I still need such as the check engine light for the TEC3 . The turn signals have their own wiring running to the gauge cluster and are not controlled by the IPC . The high beam indicator is controlled by the BCM . I chose to keep the ABS , E-brake , and airbag lights thou . But I am using LED's in the new cluster .
Most of the lights being used are still controlled by the BCM so as long as you keep the stock cluster and relocate it you can rewire the lights into a new cluster to still work .
But on a car running a factory PCM the principle is still the same except on the speedo you will need to run the PCM out from the new speedo back to the PCM for the VSS input . Oil pressure will need the installation of a sending unit that came with the new oil press. gauge as well .
The main problem if you use a different fuel level gauge on a 1998 and newer J-body will be the sending unit itself . Up to 98' it was 0 OHM empty and 90 OHM full . After 98' it went to 40 OHM empty and 240 OHM full . The PCM uses the fuel level sending unit along with a fuel tank pressure sending unit to calculate the pressure in the fuel tank for the EVAP system . So the fuel level sending unit has two jobs when dealing with the PCM .

Mr. G.-
I appreciate all of your input on this. You are always so helpful when it comes to this kind of stuff. Seems like lately I just don't have the time anymore to fully research anything. Thanks again for the clarification.

so am i correct in thinking that if you use a tec III stand alone and removed your stock ecu completly then you can't get an autometer speedo to work?
an after market speedo can work with the factory vss sensor. at least mine does.......
Check out BlackCat Customs, they have a nice replacement that has a 140mph spedo with the rest of the gauges stock for $220 iirc.
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
