Cruise Control issue?
Sunday, July 24, 2005 6:49 PM
I have a friend who owns a 2002 Alero. When he puts on the cruise control, it stays anywhere between 40 - 70 mph. When he starts to accerlate up a hill, the cruise control turns off. Does anyone know what this could be? I really don't understand what it could be myself. I think it might be computer issues, but we want to make sure first.

When cruise is on,

If you brake, or accelerate, it turns off automatically. This is to ensure the driver has control of the vehicle at all times.

I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.

Cruise shouldn't shut down if you accerlerate. Assuming you don't hit the clutch to downshift. You can hold 70 MPH on cruise, punch it to 90 to pass, let up and it will fall back down to 70.

My first Z24 used to do something similar... if I let the car carry on the same speed up a BIG hill (I mean, huge... long... big hill... up the side of a mountain actually... this is West Coast "hills" I'm talking about)... the car would gun it trying to keep that speed, but it wouldn't be able to do it and would shut off the cruise control.

If I were to gun it myself, then when I got to the top of the hill... let off the gas... the car would slowly coast down to just below the preset speed and then the cruise would pick up again and resume "cruising"...

From my understanding, that's how it's supposed to work... but if that's not what his Alero is doing... then something isn't right. Could be anything from that description though... have to go thru and check all the inputs to the CC module, including brake & clutch pedal switches... could be as simple as something out of adjustment... there's three switches (two on brake, one on clutch) to look for.
