1st off, this isnt for a j-body vehicle. I'm sure this will apply tho.
I am looking to lower my rev-limiter to around 5500 instead of the 7500 its set at. From what I have gathered, it is set somewhere inside of the computer. Is there another way of lowering it without any major work? Mabye put a relay and a resistor somewhere in the circut? Is there something I can do to my ign?
If it helps any, the Car is a Rare 1991 Isuzu Impulse RS AWD turbo, one of 800 ever made. The ignition/fuel system consists of multiport fuel injection and uhh @!#$... not a distributor... but that self advancing ignition system for turbo'd vehicles to detor pre-detination???
I'm also looking to remove the rev limitor on a 88 Accord (bush beater) just for @!#$s and giggles; or atleast know where it is located and I'll figure it out myself.

then this should be in Other Cars
anyway...if its coded in the computer the only way to change it is with a real scanning tool(not like one from autozone) the equivalent of a tech 2 for us.
I just did a quick search on www.partsamerica.com and they list a distributor cap for it ,(Isuzu), so I would probably have to say it has a distributor.
Even funnier, the dist. cap they list is the same cap all GM 4-cyls used from the mid to late 80's.
MSD will have a product that can limit the RPM for you.
sig not found
yes definately go with an MSD setup......they are awesome..
If you have an auto, it might not shift at 5500.

If it's a DIS ignition system, then it's cake to limit the rpms. MSD makes a great line of DIS ignitions that have a soft-rev circuit built in. This simply stops the spark from occuring over the designated rpm. I use it myself on my other car to drop the rev limiter down to redline (redline=6,500 stock revlimiter=6,800ish) I'm a sure that they have just some sort of smaller box that is less expensive than going on an all out full ignition upgrade if all you want to do is just limit the revs. I'd try callin em up or pokin around on their website.

Yea I realize that, but that is for the XS (base model), the modle I have dosnt have a distributor. Its some electronic gadget thing instead, with the 2 coil packs.
This is what it looks like on the Base modle

thanks, I'll check into that. Sounds easier than reprograming the computer.
They are DIS coil packs.

That's a cool little car if you could make a descent 200-250hp........
N2O + Bolt-ons
= 220Hp/
250Tq
Coming Soon:HpTunersPro, EagleConnectingRods, WiescoPistons, 13sec2200
Stock the car is 180hp at 7psi boost with a tmic.
Here is a quick list of whats done.
Fuel Cut defender removed, pushing 14.4 psi/boost, Large Volvo FMIC with all stainless piping leading to a Cone K&N filter, ported/polished head, turbo XS bov, centerforce2 clutch kit, adjustable thermostat, boost controler, ceramic front pads, teknics racing springs, a-piller with autometer air/fuel, water temp, boost and a oil pressure guages. Short throw shifter, Walburo 255lph fuel pump, 455 injectors, 2 3/4" turbo-back exaust with a Ractive muffler, Stock bucket seats made by "SPARCO", all clarion components and a custom center consol. I ended up getting rid of the "bling" wheels and went back to stockers and removed the motor for the front flip lights.
So with all done, plus/minus the cond of the engine, I am hoping for about 200hp
For those who dont know, the engine in this car is the EXACT same engine as in the Lotus Elan M100, most parts for these cars have been discontinued, no manafactures make body kits...
What hp do 3rd gen cavvy's make? I used to have a 88 cavvy 5sp, such a gutless hunk of junk.
Stock 3rd gens make any where from 120 to 150 depending on the motor.
Nice car by the way. One thing no one els asked though, Why do you want to lower the revlimiter any way?

Another message board asked me the same thing. The bottom end is getting a little weak, Its had a hard life due to the constant abuse its suffered from racing. Due to the availability of parts for these cars I havnt had the time to drop any more $$ into it than what I already have.
Only one manafacturer makes pistons for this modle, its a forged aluminum with forged rods. The rods them-selves are about $1200 and the pistons are about a grand. I can use base modle pistons at around $300 if I had base modle rods since both types are different, but than I have to worry about too much compression since the base modle rods are longer. Aside from that they cant withstand the abuse of the turbo.
So all in all, lowering the rev limiter will save my engine for the time being untill I get things replaced.
Couldn't you just not rev it past 5500??
