I installed my a/f guage now the car runs wierd. sometimes when i first start it the idle is loopy. the car even moves front to back cause the idle is so bad. it also smokes a little now and you can smell gas really strong standing behind the car. and the damn check engine light comes on and goes off.

You installed its signal wire in the wrong place.

well the a/f gauge works right. wrong place? what do you mean?

If you tapped the wrong wire, you can get surging issues because of either low voltage to your O2 sensor or 1 of the many other common problems. Do a search.

i tapped the purple wire that im supposed to. i tapped it in the middle.

Not realy, If he intends to boost then an A/F guage is very helpfull. If he's running stock or altleast N/A, then yeah he wasted money.

its not always purple... its basically the location thats most important...
i taped the wire in the middle between the sensor and the plug.

dont tape....
solder.
considering as low as voltage that the air fuel has to reach, you want the connection to be accurate as possible.
Yeah, I wasn't sure if he was saying he taped into the wire or he taped it off with electrical tape. If you used one of those damn vampire-taps rip everything back out and solder it like it should be. Those things are crap. Any time any connections are made on a car like that they should be soldered and then secured with that shrink tape stuff to help seal out moisture/debris and keep the connection from grounding itself out.
